Castlevania continues to disappoint with its latest crossover

As a lifelong gamer who grew up with the haunting melodies and heart-stopping gameplay of Castlevania, it’s disheartening to see my beloved franchise reduced to mere cameos in other games. I remember the thrill of whipping through Dracula’s castle as Simon Belmont, or the chilling encounters with Alucard in Symphony of the Night.

If you’re a fan of Castlevania, it’s likely you’ve grown accustomed to thinking that the series may have reached its prime. Although Castlevania has evolved significantly since its debut in 1986, the absence of a new game since 2014’s Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 has left us feeling rather anxious.

Lately, Konami has been giving attention to games that have been left untouched, as both Metal Gear and Silent Hill are receiving some tender love and care. Sadly, Castlevania continues to lie in rest, with a stake impaling it and a clove of garlic blocking its mouth.

Castlevania is getting another crossover

A Resetera era user spotted 72 different characters in the leaked Astro Bot gameplay, including characters from Silent Hill, Metal Gear, Tekken, etc

Currently, Castlevania has become famous for pachinko games and collaborations with other titles. Though we appreciate the Castlevania DLC in Dead Cells and the presence of Vlad and Trevor in Dead By Daylight, there’s a concern that Castlevania might be losing its unique franchise identity. Sadly, the recent update doesn’t seem to offer any reassurance on this matter.

15 minutes of gameplay for Astro Bot, my favorite new platformer from Team Asobi, has been leaked online, and a thread on ResetEra is pointing out 72 different gaming cameos hidden within. It’s going to be pretty cool to spot all these familiar faces as I play through this charming PlayStation exclusive. Since it’s a Sony title, it’s no surprise that many of the cameos have ties to the Blue Team’s rich history.

Among the popular characters such as Sackboy from LittleBigPlanet and Ryu from Street Fighter, there’s also Dante (from Devil May Cry), the feline protagonist of Stray, and Chaurli (from God of War, not Kratos). Interestingly, Sony will bring the Zelda-like game Dark Cloud back into focus in 2024.

Konami’s top trio are included, featuring Solid Snake from Metal Gear, Pyramid Head from Silent Hill, and Alucard from Castlevania. Regrettably, it seems that Castlevania is receiving recognition everywhere except within its own title.

The popularity of Castlevania remains undiminished, as evidenced by the Castlevania: Anniversary Collection and two Netflix adaptations, which serve as reminders of its enduring appeal. Many fans eagerly anticipate Konami’s return to developing Silent Hill, hoping that it won’t be too long before Dracula makes a comeback.
