Crossed Film Adaptation in the Works With The Boys Co-Creator

Crossed Film Adaptation in the Works With The Boys Co-Creator

As a veteran moviegoer who has seen my fair share of blood-curdling, mind-boggling, and spine-chilling films, I can confidently say that the upcoming adaptation of Garth Ennis’ comic series, Crossed, is an exciting development in the horror genre. Having delved into the dark and disturbing world of The Boys, I can only imagine what horrors await us in this new venture.

Among the most nerve-wracking comic book series ever created is now set to receive its long-awaited film adaptation, which is truly fitting for the massive following it has amassed over the years. Given the immense popularity of “The Boys“, it’s only logical that other comics by Garth Ennis, such as “Crossed“, will eventually be brought to life in live-action productions.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, a movie adaptation of the popular comic book series “Crossed,” written by Garth Ennis and illustrated by Jane Burrows, is currently in development. Garth Ennis has agreed to work with Six Studios on this project. Additionally, Carl Choi from Six Studios, Ben Hung from Retro Entertainment, and Ken Levin from Nightsky Productions will serve as producers. The original comic book series ran for ten issues from 2008 to 2010 and was known for its graphic depictions of violence, torture, cannibalism, and various horrifying situations. After the initial series’ success, more issues were published by different writers with similar themes.

The initial comic book depicts a scenario similar to a zombie outbreak, where a disease transforms most people into ruthless psychopaths with intelligence. Those who contract the virus develop a distinctive cross-shaped mark on their faces and lose all self-control, acting solely on their deepest impulses. Given the graphic violence we’ve witnessed in The Boys, it’s likely that the upcoming movie will outdo the Prime Video series in terms of gore.

The makers have emphasized that the movie will closely follow the original comics, ensuring it’s more about the human experience than just action and violence. Specifically, Carl Choi mentioned that the film would combine elements from “The Walking Dead”, “Contagion”, and “Civil War” to produce a movie that stays true to the source material.

Crossed Inspired Another Live-Action Horror Film

The tale titled “Crossed” works effectively as a comic book, but could be overly grim for a live-action movie. Yet, the unexpected news of a full-length feature film isn’t entirely unprecedented since a movie based on these comics has been produced before. While not a precise representation of the comic, “The Sadness“, a 2021 Taiwanese horror film, shares several striking resemblances with “Crossed“.

As a cinephile, I must admit that while the core concept of “The Sadness” bears a striking resemblance to that of “Crossed,” it wasn’t derived from an adaptation, but instead was ignited by the captivating narrative of a comic book. In an enlightening chat with iHorror, director Rob Jabbaz shed light on the origins of “The Sadness.” He revealed how the film was conceived and brought to life.

“Crossed served as a significant inspiration, but the idea didn’t originate there. In fact, the pandemic broke out, and my boss unexpectedly proposed that I write a movie immediately, with the goal of releasing it within six months. He even offered to finance it. With a bit of hesitation, I agreed and asked for his guidance. He insisted that the plot should revolve around a pandemic or something similar, with a zombie-like theme being his preferred choice.”

In the world of horror, I found myself immersed in the chilling tale of “The Sadness”, a story centered around characters named Jim (Berant Zhu) and Kat (Regina Lei). This film presents a city overrun by humans transformed into bloodthirsty sadists due to some unknown infection. The disturbing sequences depicted are akin to the world portrayed in “Crossed”. As a fan, I can’t help but appreciate the potential of a faithful adaptation of “Crossed”, given its widespread popularity and influence. However, let’s hope that this movie avoids the pitfalls of some less successful comic adaptations, like “Jonah Hex” and “Morbius”. If done right, it could prove to be an intriguing cinematic experience.
