Ted Danson on Oceana’s SeaChange Summer Party, Working With Amazon to Reduce Single-Use Plastic

As a dedicated ocean enthusiast and ardent fan of Ted Danson, it was truly inspiring to witness his unwavering commitment towards ocean conservation at the Oceana SeaChange Summer Party. His relentless efforts over the years, coupled with his ability to rally celebrities and raise significant funds for this noble cause, is nothing short of commendable.

On Saturday, Ocean Conservation’s global advocacy group, known as the largest in the world, hosted their yearly SeaChange Summer Event.

Having attended numerous fundraising events throughout my career as a conservationist, I must say that the annual Laguna Beach party stands out as one of the most impactful and heartwarming gatherings I’ve ever been part of. This year, hosted by the charismatic Ted Danson, the event managed to raise an impressive $1.5 million for campaigns aimed at protecting and restoring oceans not just in California, but globally. With 17 years under its belt, this party has already raised over $20 million – a testament to the generosity and commitment of those who attend. As someone who’s spent countless hours working on ocean conservation efforts, I can only imagine the difference this money will make in preserving our precious marine ecosystems for future generations. Kudos to Ted Danson and his team for their tireless dedication to this noble cause!

“The actor expressed that they have an incredibly devoted, helpful, and giving crowd at this event, which happens to be one of their favorites. They also mentioned that it’s common for Hollywood celebrities to participate in this charity event.” (or)

As a long-time advocate for environmental causes, I was thrilled to attend this year’s event honoring Valarie Van Cleave, a fellow sea change co-founder and dedicated supporter. The evening began with an inspiring address from the organization’s new CEO, Jim Simon, setting the tone for a night filled with optimism and hope.

During the entirety of the gathering, Oceana showcased over two dozen successes from the previous year. These triumphs ranged from persuading Amazon to cut back on single-use plastics across North America, securing new sanctuaries for marine life in multiple nations, and taking steps in California to minimize the risk of whales and sea turtles becoming ensnared in commercial fishing nets.

As a board member of Oceana, Danson effortlessly recalls the group’s numerous triumphs. “Plastics pose a massive issue everywhere, even in southern California,” he pointed out, noting that they collaborated with Amazon to minimize single-use plastics. “They plan to phase out plastic pillows by the end of 2024,” he concluded.

“In terms of handling plastic matters, we frequently collaborate with our partners. We’re taking the initiative here, as Danson pointed out, and there are numerous other organizations contributing alongside us in this effort.”

The performer underscored the damaging impact of plastics, stating emphatically, “It’s a significant issue we face. These synthetic materials are expected to almost double by the middle of this century.”

As a gamer, I’d put it this way: “It’s not merely about being good at sorting waste. That’s just a clever tagline from the plastics industry, but it falls flat. In reality, only around 8% of all plastic ever produced has been recycled, and often, that’s just down-cycling – transforming that bottle into a lower quality item, like a plastic lawn chair. But eventually, even that ends up being a problem.”

Between my adventures with Oceana and Danson’s diverse array of projects, I’ve been diving into a podcast about Cheers, alongside my old on-screen buddy Woody Harrelson. It’s like striking gold to have the chance to converse for over an hour, in a genuine, laid-back manner, delving as deep as we can into how this person transformed into who they are today.
