As an ardent fan who has grown up watching Bollywood classics and their iconic characters, I can’t help but feel a wave of excitement seeing Ananya Panday stepping into the shoes of Kareena Kapoor’s beloved character Poo from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. The fact that Karan Johar himself has drawn parallels between the two is simply mind-blowing!
Ananya Panday will make her first appearance on online streaming platforms with the series “Call Me Bae.” The series trailer was revealed on August 20th. During the launch event, Karan Johar compared Ananya’s character to Kareena Kapoor’s beloved character Poo from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, stating that if Rohan and Poo had a daughter, she would be similar to “Bae.” He further explained that “Bae” is essentially an updated version of Gen Z for the iconic character Poo. In other words, Ananya’s character picks up where Kareena Kapoor’s Poo leaves off.
At the unveiling of Call Me Bae’s trailer, Karan Johar provided some intriguing perspectives and pointed out similarities between Ananya Panday’s role in the show and Kareena Kapoor’s memorable Poo from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. Johar proposed that if Rohan and Pooja Raichand had a daughter today, she would be very much like the character portrayed in Call Me Bae, whom we now call “Bae”.
Karan Johar stated that Ananya Panday’s role in “Call Me Bae” mirrors a contemporary, Generation Z adaptation of Kareena Kapoor’s character Poo. He explained that Bae continues the storyline where Poo left off and noted, “That’s the most accurate way I can put it because even when you recall the character of Poo, it began with playful antics before, of course, contributing to the emotional transformations in the movie ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’.”
He commended Ishita Moitra, the mastermind behind the show, as well as her dedicated team, for producing a series that is not just fashionable and amusing, but also rich in depth.
Call Me Bae trailer kicks off with Ananya Panday’s character sharing how she used to lead a life of luxury in New Delhi, only to face a harsh reality when her bank cards get declined, signifying her sudden fall to middle-class status. The story then shifts to Mumbai, where Ananya’s character struggles to find her footing, taking on various tasks like applying for a social media journalist job and dealing with the challenges of daily life.
At a touching instance, she confides in a security guard about her difficulties, who remarks that such hardships are the foundation of dreams. In response, she cleverly quotes Siddharth Chaturvedi’s famous statement about nepotism and perseverance, thereby concluding the trailer.
The comedy-drama series titled “Call Me Bae” is developed under the banner of Dharmatic Entertainment, with Karan Johar, Hiroo Yash Johar, and Apoorva Mehta supporting the production. Notably, Karan Johar takes on the role of Executive Producer as well. The creative minds behind this series are Ishita Moitra (creator) and Colin D’Cunha (director), who lead a writing team consisting of Ishita Moitra, Samina Motlekar, and Rohit Nair.
As a devoted follower, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be part of an exciting project called “Call Me Bae,” streaming exclusively on Prime Video starting September 6. The stellar cast includes Ananya Panday in the lead, supported by Vir Das, Gurfateh Pirzada, Varun Sood, Vihaan Samat, Muskkaan Jaferi, Niharika Lyra Dutt, Lisa Mishra, and Mini Mathur, each bringing their unique talents to key roles. I can’t wait for you all to see it!
