Dexter Star Michael C. Hall Reveals Details of Original Sin Prequel & Resurrection Sequel

As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for dark and twisted narratives, I must say that the return of Michael C. Hall to the Dexter franchise is nothing short of exhilarating. Having witnessed the complex journey of Dexter Morgan from the very beginning, it’s like revisiting an old friend who’s just been released from a long, unjust imprisonment.

Actor Michael C. Hall, who famously plays Dexter, has given a sneak peek into the details behind his return to the popular Showtime series following the announcement at SDCC. At the event, it was disclosed that Hall won’t just voice the upcoming prequel series, “Dexter: Original Sin,” but he will also take the lead in a new sequel titled “Dexter: Resurrection.” The actor has now hinted (through EW) what fans might see from his return, the early years of serial killer Dexter Morgan, and how the prequel might influence the upcoming sequel.

“The performances they’ve delivered are outstanding, and I eagerly anticipate, much like a fan, both watching them and as an actor, studying real footage that will bring Dexter’s early days to life in vivid detail. This new depiction of his memories will serve as a valuable resource for my understanding of future installments of the series, which I can currently only hint at.”

The new series titled “Dexter: Original Sin” will continue the story with a younger version of the character residing in Miami in the year 1991. In this iteration, Patrick Gibson from “The OA” portrays Dexter Morgan, and the narrative will delve into his transformation into the vengeful figure fans are familiar with. The series will also reveal Harry Morgan as Dexter’s father, played by Christian Slater, and Debra Morgan, Dexter’s sister, acted by Molly Brown. Additionally, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Patrick Dempsey, Christina Milian, James Martinez, Reno Wilson, and Alex Shimizu are part of the star-studded cast alongside Gibson.

Not only does it seem Hall will be back as the narrator, but showrunner Clyde Phillips has also joined the team for the upcoming series, Dexter: Original Sin. This could mean that we’re in for a high-quality addition to the expanding Dexter franchise.

The show “Dexter” debuted in the autumn of 2006 and featured Michael C. Hall portraying Dexter Morgan, a complex character who was both a blood-spatter analyst for the Miami police department and a nighttime serial killer. The finale of the series, now widely regarded as one of the most unsatisfying in television history, led to a 2021 revival titled “Dexter: New Blood“. However, this revival only seemed to replicate the controversial ending of the original series rather than offering an improvement. Now, with the upcoming release of “Dexter: Resurrection“, will the third attempt be successful?

As of now, specifics about the plot of “Dexter: Resurrection” are yet to be disclosed, such as whether Dexter survived in the end of “New Blood” or if he’ll take on the role of his son Harrison’s “Dark Passenger.” At SDCC, Michael Hall expressed his eagerness about revisiting the world of Dexter.

As a devoted film enthusiast, I must say that I’m absolutely thrilled! There’s an intellectual stimulation and emotional satisfaction that comes from being partially immersed in the story. I can catch glimpses of what lies ahead, but the suspense is electrifying. I’ve been acquainted with this character for quite some time now, and to revisit their journey, to see the creative gaps bridged, it promises an unparalleled experience.

The original series “Dexter: Original Sin” is set to air in December 2024. On the other hand, the anticipated revival, titled “Dexter: Resurrection”, is slated for a summer premiere in 2025 on Paramount+.
