‘Hated’ Assassin’s Creed Shadows parkour compared to a Shrek video game

'Hated’ Assassin’s Creed Shadows parkour compared to a Shrek video game

As a lifelong fan of the Assassin’s Creed series, I can’t help but feel disheartened by the reaction to Assassin’s Creed Shadows. After years of anticipation for a Japan-set game, it seems that Ubisoft has managed to turn even that excitement into controversy with the inclusion of Yasuke.

Regardless of your opinions on Ubisoft, it’s unfortunate that the development team seems unable to avoid issues with “Assassin’s Creed Shadows.” For quite some time, fans have been eagerly anticipating an Assassin’s Creed game set in Japan, and now that one is coming, it appears they can’t help but mar it with a samurai sword.

Following acclaimed games such as Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, it seemed like the stealth series had regained its prominent position. But, after some letdown with Assassin’s Creed Mirage, there was optimism that Shadows would win back long-time fans. Regrettably, the presence of Yasuke has sparked much debate and controversy.

The decision to include Yasuke as the real-life black samurai has proved divisive. Some argue over its historical accuracy, and others have gone as far as calling Ubisoft racist. Still, the team is sticking by Yasuke and saying it took specific precautions to ensure its cultural sensitivity.

As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but notice the new gameplay footage circulating around. It’s an Assassin’s Creed game, after all, and nothing quite gets my adrenaline pumping like some classic parkour action. However, it seems that the developers have inadvertently stirred up a bit of a storm with their latest display of Yasuke performing a rooftop leap followed by a barrel roll. Given the ever-growing grumpiness of the fanbase, this reaction might as well be expected.

Previously, there was a warning that Shadows might redesign parkour, and although critics questioned the need to change something that seemed fine, those same passionate players have expressed their dissatisfaction with Yasuke appearing to stumble during his actions.

In a recent demonstration, Ubisoft introduced an innovative form of parkour featuring a female protagonist named Naoe, who traverses rooftops using a grappling hook. Despite appreciating the fluid movements of Naoe, the actions of another character, Yasuke, are not being met with the same enthusiasm.

1. One dissatisfied player commented, “It seems the platforming movements in a Shrek-style game are what’s depicted here“, while another chimed in, “The animation is stunning; it appears they used at least three different frames“. A third opined, “Perhaps you should give Ghosts of Tsushima a try instead“. Many others remarked that this doesn’t resemble an Assassin’s Creed game at all.

Although Assassin’s Creed Shadows has the potential to improve upon its release, the team currently faces a difficult challenge in improving the game’s standing. Here’s hoping that when Yasuke and Naoe debut on November 15, things will run more smoothly.
