Sterling Ruby Brings New Multi-Medium Works to Shinsegae Gallery

As a lifelong art enthusiast who has traversed the globe to quench my insatiable thirst for visual masterpieces, I can confidently say that Sterling Ruby’s ‘The Flower Cutter Rests on Dust Covered Steps’ at Shinsegae Gallery in Seoul is a must-see exhibit. With roots deeply entrenched in materiality, process, and history, this American contemporary artist’s works span various mediums, each a testament to his profound understanding of the human condition.

Starting on September 5 and running through November 30, Sterling Ruby’s solo exhibition titled ‘The Flower Cutter Rests on Dust Covered Steps’ will be held at Shinsegae Gallery Cheongdam in Seoul, South Korea. This renowned contemporary American artist presents a collection of fresh pieces across multiple mediums, each piece carrying themes related to materials, techniques, and background.

In this exhibition, various rooms showcase unique projects, ranging from tactile ceramics and meaningful collages to minimalist aluminum sculptures and dynamic paintings. The title suggests a gardener’s responsibility for cultivating growth, decay, and rebirth, with the artworks expressing a mood of sadness and the delicate balance between nature and civilizations.

Key pieces include Basin Theology/Dracula Boat, a ceramic symbolizing the transition between life and the underworld, and FP (Flower Power) sculptures inspired by 1960s anti-war protests. The show also includes DRFTRS collages, which mix images of flowers with pulp novel covers.

Additionally, Ruby will debut an archive from his fashion label, S.R. STUDIO. LA. CA., in Korea.
