Robert Downey Jr. Recalls Kevin Feige Pitching Him Doom: “Let’s Get Victor Von Doom Right”

As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for Marvel and Robert Downey Jr., I must say this news has sent me into a frenzy of excitement! The prospect of Tony Stark, or rather Victor Von Doom, returning to the MCU is nothing short of mind-blowing.

About a year past, Robert Downey Jr., along with his wife and producing partner Susan Downey, had a conversation with the head of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige.

As a diehard fan, it wasn’t surprising to hear Downey and Feige in conversation, given their continued friendship post Downey’s exit from the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Avengers: Endgame. However, things took an unexpected turn when Feige casually hinted at the possibility of Downey reprising his role in the MCU, despite Tony Stark being deceased. A mind-boggling multiverse twist indeed!

“Susan asked, ‘What shape or form would your return be in?’)”)

Downey and Feige continued their discussion on matters that would need to be addressed if the actor decided to come back.

“Downey reminisced about the conversation, stating, ‘How can we avoid regressing? How can we not fall short of expectations? How can we surpass them even more?’ He then mentioned Victor Von Doom. I delved into this character, and he said, ‘Let’s make sure we get Victor Von Doom just right.'”

Previously, Downey had expressed his interest in discussing potential contributions to Disney’s parks and location-based entertainment with CEO Bob Iger. Not long after, he was indeed visiting the executive’s residence.

Previously informed about the concept of Doctor Doom, Iger promptly approved by saying, “I find it appealing,” and subsequently organized a visit for Downey and Feige to Disney’s Imagineering Campus to check out the ongoing projects.

Downey remarked, “We’re discussing two individuals who are typically hard to impress, and yet, here we are, amazed simultaneously. The current situation surpasses anything I ever thought could be achievable.”

Since departing from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Downey has maintained a strong relationship with directors Joe and Anthony Russo, along with Iron Man director Jon Favreau. At San Diego Comic-Con in July, Feige announced that The Russo Brothers would return to direct two films: Avengers: Doomsday for 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars for 2027.

A band of individuals clad like characters from Doom invaded the stage, and one of them advanced. After removing his mask, it turned out to be Downey. This was one of the most astonishing revelations ever at Comic-Con.

“A new face covering, but the job remains the same,” Downey said to the audience. “Let me tell you, I truly enjoy portraying complex roles.”

In an extensive conversation with Scott Feinberg on the podcast “Awards Chatter,” Downey, currently competing for Emmys for portraying five characters in the HBO/Park Chan-wook miniseries “The Sympathizer,” opened up about various aspects of his career. Here’s their engaging discussion:
