On Wednesday, I caught a glimpse of the thrilling trailer for the 2024 Oldenburg Film Festival. This isn’t just any festival; it’s at the heart of a rebellion in a future world where humans stand up against an AI-dominated reality. The storyline presents a chilling future where superintelligent A.I., ruling supreme, has dismantled empathy and emotions, and degraded human culture through algorithms. As a gamer, I can’t wait to see how this narrative unfolds!
The trailer presented here is modeled after the unique style of “La Jetée,” a pioneering 1962 French sci-fi short film by Chris Marker, which primarily employed still images to narrate a time travel story set in a post-nuclear war environment. You can watch it below for reference.
Actress Amanda Plummer, renowned for her role in Pulp Fiction and recipient of a lifetime award at the 2016 Oldenburg Film Festival, lends her voice to this film’s trailer, which spans approximately 5 minutes. In a light-hearted moment, Torsten Neumann, co-founder and director of the Oldenburg Film Festival, quips that it is undoubtedly the longest festival trailer ever made.
In addition to retro-style sci-fi visuals, the film showcases snapshots of famous attendees and memorable moments spanning the last three decades of Oldenburg, including Matthew Modine, a frequent visitor who has an award named after him at the festival, as well as Seymour Cassel, who passed away. Moreover, Nicolas Cage graced the fest in 2016, receiving both a lifetime achievement award and a star on the city’s walk of fame.
Oldenburg’s humorous, movie-savvy trailer compilations have become a staple at film festivals. Previously, they’ve poked fun at films such as The Matrix, Fast & Furious, and Apocalypse Now.
