As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I must say that Black Myth: Wukong has caught my eye (and hands) like no other game recently. The blend of melee combat and magical spells is reminiscent of the classic action-RPGs from yesteryear, but with a modern twist that keeps things fresh and exciting.
Yesterday saw the launch of Black Myth: Wukong, a game that has garnered both critical and commercial success to a remarkable degree. While some level of praise was anticipated, it still took many industry professionals by surprise due to its breathtaking graphics, combat mechanics reminiscent of Soul series games, and richly detailed backstory.
As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of gaming, I can confidently say that this game feels like it could be a strong contender for Game of the Year. If you haven’t yet embarked on your journey as the Monkey King in the West, or if, like me, you found the challenges a bit more daunting than expected, this guide is just what you need to enhance your adventure and make it a smoother ride.
1. Level Up
In the style of every role-playing game with action elements, advancing in levels is crucial. If you find yourself having difficulty, it may be because you’re underleveled or have misdirected your skill point assignments. Advancing in levels yields Sparks, which can then be distributed among various skill trees to enhance your staff combat styles, spellcasting abilities, transformation options, and overall attributes.
Fortunately, the game Black Myth: Wukong provides flexibility by enabling you to redistribute skill points whenever needed. This way, you can tailor your character’s abilities according to your preferred playstyle and adapt effectively against various opponents.
To accumulate Spark energy, concentrate on vanquishing adversaries, traversing the environment, and locating Meditation Sites. When encountering tough opponents, examine the surrounding area for weaker enemies to defeat, level up, and collect more Sparks. Each region’s meditation site you visit rewards one skill point.
2. Skills to Select First
On my adventure, I’m constantly discovering new abilities with my Sparks as I progress. It’s good to know that I can rearrange these skills whenever I set foot in a Shrine (I’ll go into detail about that later), but there are certain skills I need to unlock swiftly for a smoother journey.
- Simian Agility
- Rampant Vigor
- Cloud Step
- Force Unbound
- Mobile Spin
- Crash
These skills will make your character stronger, more brutal, and more agile, all essential in this game. They also affect stamina, health, damage, and armor.
3. In Combat, Dodging is Crucial
As a gamer diving into Black Myth: Wukong, I’ve noticed that the combat feels reminiscent of the Souls series, but with its own unique twist. Instead of relying on the familiar parry mechanic, I find myself frequently rolling and dodging to avoid enemy attacks.
As a devoted admirer, I can’t stress enough the importance of perfecting the art of dodging, an ability that will prove crucial in our upcoming encounters. My very first battle served as a valuable lesson on how to dodge, offering a glimpse into what lies ahead for the Monkey King.
If you manage to evade an opponent’s strike just in the nick of time, a fleeting impression of Wukong will linger, momentarily bewildering them. This small window of confusion grants you the opportunity to deliver a powerful blow.
A key point to remember: Wandering White is a boss that you cannot defeat upon initial encounter. Instead, it serves as an opportunity to hone your combat skills, with the outcome of defeating it remaining unchanged at this stage.
4. Keeper’s Shrines are More than Important
Make sure you never miss a chance to stop by Keeper’s Shrines. These shrines are not only useful for recuperating health and mana, but also for crafting, purchasing, and selling items. Plus, they allow you to save your game progress.
They offer a variety of choices, such as rapid transportation, the ability to concoct medications, brew diverse beverages and sake, select magic, enhance abilities, and elevate the power of spirits.

In each part of the game, you’ll find save points, also known as checkpoints. Unlike some other action RPGs where you need to visit a shrine to level up, these serve a similar purpose in games like Lies of P, Dark Souls, and Elden Ring, among others. You don’t have to stop at them to gain experience, but they do provide important functions within the game.
5. Melee Combat Will Get you So Far, Use Spells to Advance
As a gamer immersed in Black Myth: Wukong, I’ve found that while the game is primarily focused on close-quarters combat, strategic use of spells can significantly shift battle dynamics in my favor.
Initially, you’ll start with a single spell at your disposal, but as you advance through the game, you’ll uncover additional ones. Remember to exercise caution when using spells because several require more time to cast and may be cut off.
Monkey King, Wukong, possesses multiple magical abilities. One of these spells is the Ring of Fire, as the name suggests. Another is A Pluck of Many, which allows him to generate multiple copies of himself during battle. Lastly, there’s Cloud Step, through which he can produce a foggy decoy.
In every battle, be it against a formidable boss or a swarm of minions, these powerful assets are indispensable. Don’t think twice about casting spells when the need arises. Keep in mind that using these abilities consumes Mana, which regenerates at a slower pace compared to your stamina.
6. Exploration Can Lead to Secret Areas with High Rewards
In Black Myth: Wukong, the gameplay follows a linear progression as you travel from one sanctuary to another. Yet, venturing away from the main path may lead to unexpected riches such as treasure chests, optional battles against powerful bosses that offer experience points and upgrade materials, plus various beneficial items.
7. Black Myth: Wukong Doesn’t Have a Traditional Map
On this trip, it won’t be a walk in the park. You’ll be following the legendary route from the renowned novel, and there’s no need for a map since it’s already charted. Although the game is sequential, venturing will lead you to various detours that veer off the main path into new territories.
Should you find yourself feeling lost at any point, don’t worry! Along your path, there will be flickering campfires guiding you towards the next Keeper’s Shrine. It might take some getting used to, but fear not – you’ll quickly catch on as you progress in your gameplay.
8. Use Transformation as Often as Possible
Sun Wukong boasts the skill to change into a potent being. Once transformed, you’ll have full command over this shape until you revert back to the monkey form. However, to access these transformations, you’ll need to overcome particular foes or bosses who hold these powers.
You’ll spot a radiant, blue blaze – a sign that the adversary is an advanced boss. After vanquishing them, they’ll depart behind a flicker you can gather to activate their metamorphosis.
After being unleashed, you have the ability to use them whenever needed by employing the stored fire, yet it’s advisable to save them for confrontations with bosses when increased damage and health will be essential.
As a seasoned gamer who has delved into numerous titles, I find Black Myth: Wukong to be an intriguing adventure that caters to both newcomers and experienced players alike. To get off on the right foot or navigate through tough patches, here’s some advice from my gaming journey.
