As a seasoned gamer who’s seen more than a few episodes of Saturday Night Live over the years, I have to admit that Punkie Johnson‘s departure from the show left me scratching my head… or perhaps it was my controller!
Punkie Johnson has decided to share the explanation behind her exit from ‘Saturday Night Live’ after spending four exciting seasons there.
More recently, the comedian made an appearance on the “Fly on the Wall” podcast, where she candidly shared with hosts and former SNL stars Dana Carvey and David Spade that she often felt out of place on NBC’s sketch comedy program. It was previously disclosed by Johnson at a comedy event last month that she wouldn’t be coming back for the show’s historic 50th season.
Last year during the start of our 49th gaming season, I had a chat with my team and shared my doubts, saying something like, “Guys, I’m not sure if I’m cut out for this gaming gig, so maybe it’s time for me to move on.” But they were persuasive, urging me not to make any hasty decisions. They said, “Johnson, you need a strategy. You can’t simply abandon your team.”
Johnson expressed her delight that her last season was “exceptional,” stating, “I managed to secure around three or four sketches in the first half. Typically, I only receive two or three throughout the entire season, so I was overjoyed, thinking, ‘Wow, this is my year!'”
However, things changed significantly when Ben Silva, her writer, left Saturday Night Live (SNL). This prompted Johnson to reassess her role on NBC’s series. Johnson stated that Silva had a unique understanding of her style, saying, “He just knew how to express Punkie in the SNL format.” For Johnson, attempting to do this herself was challenging because it required transforming her ideas into the specific SNL format.
In the end, the actress from “Love Life” chose to depart and concentrate on other ventures, including stand-up comedy. She expressed this sentiment when she said, “I didn’t quite feel at home there, like I wasn’t in my comfort zone. That show is for a different kind of individual,” as she shared with Carvey and Spade.
She remarked, “Since I’m from stand-up comedy, I assumed everyone else was too.” Later on, she talked to people and found out that they had formal education. Her response was, “You all went to school to be here?”
As she looks forward, Johnson is brimming with anticipation regarding her professional future. “Since it was announced that I wouldn’t be returning to the show, my phone has been incessantly ringing, and opportunities have been pouring in,” she shared. “It’s absolutely astonishing!”
Back in 2020, I became part of the hilarious cast at Saturday Night Live as a featured player. Not long after, I made the tough decision to move on and announced my departure. Interestingly enough, my fellow SNL star Molly Kearney followed suit and shared she too was leaving the show around the same time.
