Manish Malhotra recalls how he became friends with Karan Johar and it has Sridevi connection; find out

As a lifestyle expert with an eye for both fashion and friendship dynamics, I find Manish Malhotra’s three-decade journey with Karan Johar nothing short of captivating. Their bond, which began on the sets of Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, is a testament to the power of collaboration and mutual respect in the creative industry.

Manish Malhotra, a well-known fashion designer, recently looked back on his 30-year friendship with filmmaker Karan Johar. This friendship blossomed during their work together on Aditya Chopra’s movie, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, where Karan was an assistant director and Manish handled the costume design. Recently, Manish shared memories of their relationship and remembered his initial encounter with Kjo, which took place on Sridevi’s film set. He also mentioned a rare instance of professional disagreement they had, ending up playfully throwing lehengas at each other to resolve their difference.

During a chat on the We Are Yuvaa YouTube channel, Malhotra recounted his initial encounter with Karan. He detailed that it was Sridevi who invited him for the movie Gumrah, a production by Yash Johar. It was actually on the film set where they first crossed paths. Frequently when he’d call Yash Johar with queries, it was usually Karan who would pick up the phone.

In the end, Karan noticed that Manish had never greeted him, prompting an apology from Manish who then started greeting him before asking about Yash Johar. As time passed, they crossed paths a few more times on set, and following a dinner outing where they conversed, their friendship gradually grew.

Malhotra stated that the incident occurred in 1993. When questioned about his connection with Kjo, he disclosed that Karan’s fascination with fashion and his role as a film costume designer attracted him. Regarding an amusing tale Johar narrated about their supposed pillow fight with a lehenga during their single argument, Malhotra chuckled and made it clear that they didn’t actually hurl the lehenga at each other. He elaborated that Karan had overstated the story.

In the process of working on the song “Suraj Hua Maddham” for the movie Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Manish remembered he had taken the lehenga to Karan’s office with much excitement. However, when Karan disliked it, Manish was deeply offended and felt a strong sense of personal disappointment. His complexion flushed, and he grew agitated, ultimately deciding to leave the office. He confessed that in his anger, he may have slammed the lehenga onto the table.

In terms of his professional life, Malhotra is now serving as the director for the movie “Bun Tikki,” featuring prominent actors such as Zeenat Aman, Shabana Azmi, and Abhay Deol.
