Lord Of The Rings: The War Of Rohirrim Trailer Promises An Epic Theatrical Return To Middle-Earth, But It's The Miyazaki Vibes I'm Especially Excited About

As a lifelong fan who’s spent countless hours immersed in Middle-earth, I can confidently say that this era is nothing short of a dream come true for us die-hard Tolkien enthusiasts. The trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The War of Rohirrim has me positively giddy with excitement!

It’s honestly such a great time to be a Lord of the Rings fan. Between The Lord of the Rings: The Rings Of Power Season 2 premiere date being next week and a Gollum movie from Peter Jackson and Andy Serkis on the way, there’s a lot to look forward to from the fantastical world of J.R.R. Tolkien. And now we have the first trailer (above) for The Lord of the Rings: The War of Rohirrim movie to get us excited for the first theatrical release from the franchise in a decade.

The trailer for “The War of Rohirrim” heralds the first anime adaptation of “Lord of the Rings,” and it appears to be a stunning creation by Kenji Kamiyama, known for his work on “Ghost in the Shell,” “Ultraman,” and “Blade Runner: Black Lotus.” After its debut, the story, set 200 years prior to the main series, seems to promise a visually stunning cinematic experience slated for late 2024. What particularly excites me is how much this resembles a Hayao Miyazaki film.

I Love That Lord Of The Rings: The War Of Rohirrim Is A Big-Screen Event

Indeed, the last time crowds flocked to witness Middle-earth on the silver screen was in 2014’s “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,” directed by Peter Jackson. It’s exciting to notice the trailer bridging the gap between the initial films and this one. A stunning transformation is showcased, revealing a 2D animation that promises numerous chances to explore Middle-earth from a fresh perspective.

2021 was when The War of Rohirrim was announced, and hearing New Line Cinema say it’s “speeding towards the big screen” really gets me pumped! In a time where animation projects are often relegated to streaming platforms, I’m thrilled that this one is slated for theaters – even with an IMAX release. Plus, the initial sneak peek didn’t disappoint at all!

The War Of Rohirrim Is Clearly Influenced By Hayao Miyazaki, And I Cannot Wait

The two-and-a-half-minute sneak peek reveals that “The War Of Rohirrim” will offer viewers a perspective on the War of the Ring during the reign of Helm Hammerhand, the ninth king of Rohan. From what we see in the trailer, it appears that the narrative centers around his daughter, Héra, who expresses her desire to join the fight and emerge as a true leader, despite being proposed to by someone who seems like a childhood friend. The story also showcases her involvement in significant battles.

During the summer, Gaia Wise, the voiceover artist for Héra, shared with Entertainment Weekly that her character has similarities to heroines from Hayao Miyazaki’s films, such as Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, and differs from female characters in the Lord of the Rings series like Arwen and Éowyn. She appears to be connected to nature and willing to engage in a fight, yet there also seems to be a deeper emotional narrative about her relationship with her father and Wulf hidden beneath this tough exterior.

Enthusiastically appreciating Hayao Miyazaki’s films, I recognize their impact and eagerly await the upcoming “Lord of the Rings” movie. What makes it even more intriguing is the prospect of observing fantastical creatures from Middle-earth in animated form, rather than computer-generated imagery. The enchantment and visual splendor showcased in this sneak peek suggest that the series was tailor-made for such an adaptation!

Exploring a story that departs from Tolkien’s extensive lore, “The War of Rohirrim” promises an intriguing adaptation of Middle-earth through the lens of a stunning anime. What excites me most is the introduction of a potent heroine who has not been featured in these films before. Mark your calendars for December 13 to catch “The War of Rohirrim” on the big screen!
