As a seasoned gamer of life, I’ve learned to appreciate the beauty that lies within the ordinary moments, much like the artists at The SHOPHOUSE Hong Kong’s latest exhibition, Daylight Cadenza. Just as a game level can seem mundane but holds a hidden treasure or secret, these works capture elusive scenes from everyday life, each offering a unique perspective and emotion.
At an orchestra performance, the cadenza is the part where a soloist takes center stage, typically improvising while the primary melody softens into the background. This lengthy, impromptu segment has sparked inspiration for The SHOPHOUSE Hong Kong’s newest collective art exhibition, showcasing unique pieces by artists including Han-Chiao, Alexander Skate, Astrid Styma, Wang Wenting, Alice Xinyan Wang, Wang Zibo, Suyi Xu, and Zheng Lanxiong.
Under the title Daylight Cadenza, this exhibition explores the artists’ recollections of summers past, depicting fleeting moments from ordinary life to images of strangers. The pieces stimulate a range of feelings, from intrigue to merriment, inviting viewers on a voyage through private, sometimes intense, diary-like episodes that reflect the varied lives of the creators.
The exhibition flows with surges and softenings, mirroring each other like acts in a visual symphony. Simultaneously, the mundane narratives of everyday life serve as a deep, rhythmic backdrop, giving ordinary scenes a new life. According to their statement, the gallery described Daylight Cadenza as a piece that’s restless yet still curious and playful, reflecting the relaxed feel of summer. As time passes and days stretch on, an undetermined cadenza, full of sweet melodies, starts to appear – what will be performed, and what will people hear?
