9 Horror Movie Franchises Fede Álvarez Should Take Over After Alien: Romulus

As a cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the dark and twisted corners of horror cinema, I can confidently say that Fede Álvarez is one of the most exciting filmmakers working today. His ability to breathe new life into classic horror properties while still paying homage to their roots is nothing short of impressive.

I don’t know about you, but I think Alien: Romulus kicks some serious Xenomorph tail. That means that director Fede Álvarez can now say he has crafted one of the strongest installments from two respective classic horror movie franchises. He broke through with an unapologetically brutal 2013 reboot of the Evil Dead films, and has now further proven his skill with a new sci-fi movie that reminds us why we fell in love with the Alien movies in the first place.

As a die-hard fan, I can hardly contain my excitement about the prospect of Fede Álvarez unveiling a fresh horror masterpiece next, particularly one that’s brand new and not a sequel or remake (like how he took the terror to another level with 2016’s “Don’t Breathe,” following up his stellar work on “Evil Dead”). Yet, a secret part of me yearns for a peek at which classic horror film series might benefit from Álvarez’s unique vision and skill. So, I indulged in some imaginative daydreaming, and here are the horror movie franchises that I, as a fan, would adore to see Fede Álvarez rejuvenate.

Friday the 13th

As a devoted follower of the chilling saga, I find myself in agreement with countless others who believe that, following 12 thrilling installments, the iconic Friday the 13th series — renowned for Jason Voorhees’ spine-tingling murder scenes — could use one final chapter. However, what I yearn for is a sequel that truly sizzles. If it isn’t Stephen King stepping into the horror scene, perhaps another creative mind can deliver a chilling conclusion that leaves us breathless.

It seems to me that Fede Álvarez would be an ideal candidate for the position, not only due to his talent for creating gripping and innovative gore scenes, but also because I feel he has a unique ability to craft compelling character-driven horror stories. This skill could undeniably breathe new life into the beloved slasher movie franchise.

Insidious

Discussing unique horror films, it’s hard to find recent ones as distinct as 2011’s “Insidious” with unforgettable visuals and clever ideas. Yet, I’m not convinced that the subsequent films have matched the brilliance of the first one.

It’s mentioned that there are plans to unveil additional Blumhouse films set in the universe crafted by James Wan and Leigh Whannell, which is acceptable. However, my excitement levels could potentially spike higher if Álvarez were given the opportunity to infuse his unique perspective into The Further.

Final Destination

Any viewer who has watched a movie directed by Fede Álvarez is well aware that this director has no shortage of skill when it comes to character deaths. He constructs these lethal scenes in such a distinctive and realistic manner, you might think you’re experiencing the pain yourself as you watch.

Thinking about this, could you envision how some of the most chilling death sequences from the Final Destination series, where fate pursues individuals who have evaded death, might appear under his supervision? I’d be quite intrigued to actually witness it myself.

Halloween

Following the release of “Halloween Ends” in 2022, I penned a piece expressing my hope that Michael Myers’ story has finally reached its conclusion – permanently this time. Yet, this doesn’t mean I don’t want more Halloween movies; on the contrary, I’d be thrilled to see the series take on a new form, perhaps transforming into an anthology, as it was briefly explored in “Halloween III: Season of the Witch” back in 1982.

If Álvarez seizes this opportunity, he’d essentially be given full control to create any Halloween-themed story, and given his past creative contributions, there’s a strong possibility that he could achieve significant success.

The Hills Have Eyes

Back in the day, I stumbled upon one of Wes Craven’s early masterpieces – a chilling tale from 1977 titled “The Hills Have Eyes.” In this heart-pounding story, my family and I embark on a road trip that takes an unexpected turn when we find ourselves stranded in the middle of a desert. But here’s the catch: this isn’t just any desert. This is where terrifying mutants lurk in caves, ready to pounce! Fast forward to 2006, and Alexandre Aja brought a fresh take on this classic horror with his remake that left audiences screaming for more.

It’s been some time since this story has been adapted by Hollywood, which might be justified. However, I believe that a film with a persistently dark, heart-wrenching, and shockingly malevolent tone like this one would suit Álvarez perfectly to reimagine according to his unique perspective.

Hellraiser

During my viewing of the 2022 version of “Hellraiser” – David Bruckner’s modern take on Clive Barker’s 1987 original about a puzzle box summoning torturous beings – I found myself filled with numerous entertaining ideas. At present, it stands out as one of the top horror films available on Hulu, surpassing many underwhelming remakes that have been released in recent times.

Nevertheless, I departed with the feeling that much of it fell short of Barker’s distinctive narrative style, visual originality, and darker atmosphere, which could have elevated it further. Under Álvarez’s guidance, this fresh Cenobites concept seems like a pairing that would be perfectly suited… if not in heaven, then somewhere equally fitting.

Demons

I’m really fond of Fede Álvarez’s take on Evil Dead, as it skillfully preserves what made the original Sam Raimi films unique while taking the story to a more refined, less campy level. I believe he might achieve similar success with the Italian cult classic Demons.

1985’s film finds a band of cinema-goers living out a cheesy B-movie scenario in reality, as they are trapped inside the theater by an unrelenting entity. It’s high time that this grisly, underappreciated classic gets another chance to shine for modern audiences.

Paranormal Activity

I don’t consider myself a fan of the “Paranormal Activity” series specifically, but I am a big enthusiast of found-footage horror movies. I would be thrilled to see Álvarez’s unique perspective on this subgenre in the future. If a new installment of the ongoing franchise that focuses on ghostly or demonic events captured on camera were to be his debut, then I think it’s an excellent idea.

He could potentially inject a long-awaited sense of novelty into the series, providing an opportunity for him to refine his abilities in creating suspense, rather than solely relying on his visual techniques.

The Fly

The first title that pops into my mind when I think of body horror movies is David Cronenberg’s 1988 remake of The Fly, in which a teleportation experiment gone wrong causes an eccentric scientist to slowly evolve into a half-human, half-insect hybrid. All hail the Brundlefly.

Romulus”, and if there was an incentive to expand on this classic sci-fi movie’s story, it would be to explore what other terrifying transformations the filmmaker might imagine.

By the close of the day, it’s safe to say that the upcoming tales from Fede Álvarez are what I eagerly anticipate the most. However, it must be admitted that the prospect of witnessing any sequels or reboots under his guidance is both an exciting dream and a potential nightmare all rolled into one.
