As a devoted fan of Chicago Fire for well over a decade now, I’ve seen characters grow and evolve, but none have captivated me quite like Kelly Severide. His unwavering dedication to his work, especially arson investigation, has always been evident. So it comes as no surprise that he’s shown little interest in climbing the ranks. He prefers getting his hands dirty, which is exactly what makes him such an intriguing character.
Over the course of its 12-season span, the TV show “Chicago Fire” has experienced a rotation of cast members, with some staying on longer than others. Within the main cast, several characters have held diverse roles and positions as they climb the ladder at the Chicago Fire Department (CFD). Remarkably, Taylor Kinney’s character, Kelly Severide, has been a lieutenant since the series premiered on NBC, but there’s a significant explanation for this continuity.
In Season 6, when Casey advanced to captain, people started wondering if Severide might soon follow suit. Notably, Chief Wallace Boden, played by Eamonn Walker, hinted at promoting Herrmann as a successor before his character’s departure. Additionally, Stella Kidd, Severide’s wife, was previously promoted to lieutenant. Despite this, some may find it troubling that Severide hasn’t been promoted. However, showrunner Andrea Newman clarified to TVLine that a promotion is actually furthest from Severide’s thoughts at this point.
He’s got his focus on the thing he is obsessed with, which is arson and OFI, in addition to squad, which he loves. There’s a lot of politics the higher you go up in rank, and Severide has no interest in that. He’s a get-your-hands-dirty kind of guy. So arson is still very much on the forefront of his mind, the possibilities of moving to OFI are at the forefront of his mind, and all of that comes up. He’s dealing with all of that this season.
In the TV show “Chicago Fire,” the topic of arson investigations has been preoccupying Severide lately, and he’s become quite active in this field. When Kinney departed the series during Season 11 due to personal matters, the plot revealed that Severide had attended an arson training program he couldn’t resist. Even after his return, he occasionally disappears for cases. This trend appears to continue, especially considering Severide might be planning a move to OFI soon.
In the event that Severide transitions to OFI, he might advance within the organization, but it’s not certain that this will occur. Regardless, as a lieutenant at 51, he already has a lot on his plate. Though it would be intriguing to witness Severide as Captain Kelly in the future, it seems there are still many exciting moments ahead with him in the upcoming season.
It appears that Severide won’t be receiving a promotion in the near future, which could turn out to be beneficial, given the numerous aspects he will need to attend to during Season 13. In the Season 12 finale, a significant revelation about Severide was made: his late father, Benny, had another child – Damon, the latest recruit at OFI. With so much on his plate, it’s understandable that focusing on a promotion isn’t currently a priority for Severide.
