Mike Flanagan Says The Life of Chuck is Not a Horror Story

As a seasoned cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the dark corners of horror cinema, I must say that Mike Flanagan’s latest offering, “The Life of Chuck,” has piqued my curiosity like no other. Five years without a big-screen premiere is an eternity for a director whose work has left such a profound mark on the genre.

After a five-year hiatus from big-screen premieres, director Mike Flanagan is set to break this spell with his latest Stephen King adaptation, “The Life of Chuck”, debuting at TIFF next month. Contrary to expectations based on his previous work like “Doctor Sleep” and “Gerald’s Game”, Flanagan emphasizes that this film isn’t a horror movie. Interestingly, he also refers to it as his favorite project he’s ever been involved with.

“Here’s something I want to clarify about ‘The Life of Chuck’: it’s not a horror story, contrary to what one might expect from a Stephen King adaptation or a project by me. Despite the fear factor often associated with these elements, this film is more aligned with the heartwarming and uplifting style seen in ‘Stand By Me’ and ‘Shawshank Redemption’. It showcases an entirely new side of my creative process. Working on it has been an unparalleled experience, and I am incredibly proud of the exceptional cast we have assembled.”

In “The Life of Chuck,” starring Tom Hiddleston as Charles “Chuck” Krantz, the narrative moves in reverse, starting at the end of the character’s life and working its way back to the beginning. This film is adapted from a novella in Stephen King’s collection titled “If It Bleeds.” In addition to Hiddleston, the cast includes regular collaborators of director Mike Flanagan such as Kate Siegel and Jacob Tremblay, along with Mark Hamill, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan, and Matthew Lillard.

Although Flanagan and the film’s cast have clarified that The Life of Chuck is not a conventional horror movie, with some supernatural elements derived from King’s story, it’s likely that some viewers will approach the film expecting it to resemble his previous work. The director has produced some outstanding horror narratives recently, such as Netflix hits like The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, and The Fall of The House of Usher, along with films like the brilliantly crafted Hush.

Instead, Flanagan advises viewers to set aside any preconceived notions when watching The Life of Chuck. This movie isn’t primarily a horror film, but instead provokes deep thought as it presents existential questions meant to encourage viewers to ponder life from various perspectives.

“Regardless of what it turns out to be, it’s an unusual, delicate creature. I hope everyone appreciates it, but please keep in mind that if you’re anticipating something scary, you might be let down. However, if you’re expecting a heartwarming exploration of life, joy, and mortality, you’ll find it satisfying.”

The biographical film titled “The Life of Chuck” will make its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 6th. However, no information has been released about a broader distribution date. Keep an eye out for updates on this exciting project, including the release of a trailer, as they become available.
