Cliffhanger 2: Sequel to Sylvester Stallone's 1993 Classic Films This Fall

As a lifelong movie enthusiast who’s seen more than a few reels of celluloid in my days, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming sequel to the iconic 1993 action-thriller, Cliffhanger 2! Sylvester Stallone returning as Gabe Walker alongside his mountain-climbing daughter? Sign me up!

It’s rumored that Sylvester Stallone, known for his hit crime series “Tulsa King” on Paramount+, could be gearing up for more excitement. However, a recent report indicates that the 78-year-old actor is also preparing to perform death-defying stunts once again in “Cliffhanger 2”, a sequel to the 1993 action-thriller where Stallone previously starred alongside John Lithgow and Michael Rooker. With an initial budget of $70 million, the original “Cliffhanger” earned a global total of $255 million and was generally well-received, receiving three Academy Award nominations, including one for Best Visual Effects upon its release.

As a fervent advocate for the revival of cinematic classics, I’m thrilled to share that according to Screen Daily, the much-anticipated sequel to the iconic action film, “Cliffhanger 2,” is set to commence filming this autumn. This exciting venture has been boosted by a substantial financial injection from the Austrian film commission. Regrettably, original director Renny Harlin won’t be at the helm for this sequel; instead, we have Jean-Francois Richet, the mastermind behind the 2005 remake of the John Carpenter classic, “Assault on Precinct 13,” stepping up to direct. The filming locations for this sequel are a mix of Austria, Bavaria, and the Penzing Studios near Munich, Germany. I can hardly wait to see what magic these talented creators will weave!

Following in the footsteps of modern sequels like “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” and “Rambo”, the upcoming film, titled “Cliffhanger 2”, will bring back Sylvester Stallone as Gabe Walker, this time joined by his mountain-climbing daughter. As for who else might be joining the cast, that’s yet to be confirmed. However, given the plot summary below, it appears set to deliver all the heart-pounding action that made the original an adored action movie classic.

“Currently residing in the breathtaking Dolomites, Gabe manages a luxury mountain retreat. On a thrilling weekend getaway with a prominent guest, an unexpected turn of events leads to their capture by hostiles. In response, his resourceful daughter employs her exceptional climbing abilities to outsmart the kidnappers, igniting a struggle for survival.”

Richet Seems to Have Listened to Cliffhanger’s Director

Prior to the release of “Cliffhanger”, Harlin was recognized for directing popular movies like “A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master”, “The Adventures of Ford Fairlane”, and “Die Hard 2”. Yet, after the successful Stallone film from 1993, he directed one of the biggest flops at the box office, namely “Cutthroat Island”. Currently, he is overseeing the reboot of “The Strangers”, a planned trilogy. The first installment this year performed well financially but was panned by critics.

Speaking about his role as director of “Cliffhanger,” Harlin shared some suggestions earlier this year for those working on the sequel. Specifically, he expressed a hope that they would be able to film scenes outdoors rather than in a studio setting, since he believes it adds an extra layer of authenticity to the movie.

“I sincerely hope that the filmmakers can capture scenes at actual locations since we filmed our movie before the era of digital cinema. Back then, we spent six months in the real Italian Alps, enduring genuine conditions while shooting everything authentically. The actors even had to physically climb mountains. Nowadays, it seems that many complex films are shot in studios instead, with snow and other mountainous conditions being digitally created.”

It appears that director Richet is following some of Harlin’s advice for “Cliffhanger 2” by filming parts in Austria and Bavaria, but whether the stunts will be performed on real mountains or green screens is yet to be determined. The movie industry has made significant strides in safety since the early ’90s, so prioritizing safety over potential risks is crucial. As more information about Stallone’s new project becomes available, we’ll keep you updated.
