‘Riders of Justice’ Stars Mads Mikkelsen, Nikolaj Lie Kaas Reteam for ‘Back to Reality’

As a long-time fan of the Danish cinema scene, I can hardly contain my excitement for Anders Thomas Jensen’s latest project, “Back to Reality.” The man behind some of the most captivating and thought-provoking films of recent years is reuniting his Riders of Justice team, and I couldn’t be more thrilled.

Anders Thomas Jensen is getting the Riders of Justice team back together.

As an enthusiastic fan, I can’t contain my excitement as writer-director Jensen calls upon the stellar duo of Mads Mikkelsen and Nikolaj Lie Kaas for his upcoming dark comedy, titled Back to Reality. These two talented actors from Riders of Justice will be joined by a star-studded Danish cast, including Lars Brygmann, Sofie Grabol, Bodil Jorgensen, Soren Malling, and Nicolas Bro. The cameras began rolling in Funen, Denmark, on August 19th, marking the start of this highly anticipated production.

The title “Back to Reality” refers to a blend of drama, comedy, and crime elements centered around a bank heist and two contrasting siblings, Anker and Manfred (portrayed by Mikkelsen and Kaas). Upon his release from prison, Anker aims to retrieve the funds he swiped during the robbery. The only person aware of its buried location is his brother Manfred, who due to childhood trauma and a protective alter ego, has no conscious memory of the money or its hiding place. In an attempt to jog Manfred’s memory, the brothers embark on a journey back to their childhood home, where they delve into both the physical landscape and the depths of their shared past.

Beyond my gaming sessions, I’m also known for my directorial work, such as “Men And Chicken” in 2015, “Adam’s Apples” in 2005, and “The Green Butchers” in 2003. Additionally, I’ve made a name for myself as a screenwriter, contributing to Susanne Bier’s 2010 Oscar winner, “In a Better World,” and Nikolaj Arcel’s period epic, “The Promised Land,” set to release in 2023.

Riders of Justice proved to be a Danish box office success and was distributed in over 50 territories worldwide. Meanwhile, Back to Reality has already secured numerous pre-sales deals, such as those with Neue Visionen and Splendid for German-speaking regions, and September Film for Benelux. Furthermore, Lionsgate has acquired the rights for an English-language adaptation of the film, with Jensen and Nikolaj Arcel set to pen the screenplay in English.

Zentropa Studios will be creating the upcoming movie, while TrustNordisk will manage global distribution. The film, titled Back to Reality, is slated for a fall 2025 premiere in Denmark.
