‘Rings of Power’ Star Morfydd Clark Was “Totally Unprepared” for Fan Hate Towards Galadriel

As a devoted fan who has eagerly followed the enchanting world of Middle-earth for years, I must say that Morfydd Clark‘s portrayal of young Galadriel in The Rings of Power has been nothing short of breathtaking. Her unapologetic and empowering character resonates deeply with me, a woman who has spent her life navigating through the complexities of a world often dominated by patriarchal norms.

Actress Morfydd Clark, from “The Rings of Power,” has spoken out about the criticism she faced for her interpretation of youthful Galadriel.

“Clark confessed in an interview with Elle that he was completely caught off guard when season 1 premiered. ‘I’ve come to understand both the ominous and charming aspects of being accessible to anyone via Instagram direct messages,’ he said.”

Clark mentioned that the majority of the negativity stemmed “mainly from male viewers.” In examining what aspects of her portrayal sparked such strong criticism from these viewers, the actress pointed out that “much of the feedback I received from some fans was for elements of the character that were empowering to others while they watched [Galadriel].”

Clark went on to say, “Some people might not have appreciated aspects of her personality, but others did. She’s bold and unapologetic, a trait I didn’t want her to suppress. Unlike other characters I’ve portrayed who carry an inherent sense of shame, Galadriel doesn’t.”

Showrunner J.D. Payne justified their portrayal of Galadriel’s character, stating that author J.R.R. Tolkien provided subtle indications that Galadriel possessed a proud and warlike nature throughout her history. In the film adaptation of Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings series directed by Peter Jackson, Cate Blanchett played Galadriel as one of Middle-earth’s most potent elves. As they crafted the series, the showrunners were eager to explore how Galadriel could evolve from a headstrong and arrogant young warrior into the wise Lady of the Wood.

In the initial season, Executive Producer Lindsey Weber explained, they wanted Galadriel to be a divisive figure because her actions eventually revealed that her apparent human companion, Hallbrand, was none other than Sauron in disguise.

“Weber mused over Galadriel’s choices that seemingly weren’t favorable, considering if Sauron could have risen to power so swiftly without her aid. Or perhaps, it may be revealed in the future that she could ultimately defeat him because of her assistance and intimate understanding of him. These thought-provoking, dramatic questions are a testament to the intrigue of characters with flaws.”

In the second season that’s coming up, Galadriel will be portrayed in a more humbled and mature state as she strives to rediscover her path towards the light. Showrunner Patrick McKay hinted at this, stating that Galadriel is seeking redemption. Furthermore, it was revealed by Clark that Galadriel must acknowledge her connection to something greater than herself, realizing that she can’t handle it alone. She is vulnerable and exposed, yearning for closure but understanding that it’s impossible to achieve.

Season 2 of The Rings of Power premieres on Amazon Prime Video on Thursday.
