Lupita Nyong’o Remembers Chadwick Boseman Four Years After His Death: “Grief Never Ends”

As a gamer who’s been through my fair share of game over screens and respawns, I can empathize with Lupita Nyong’o’s feelings about Chadwick Boseman on this bittersweet anniversary. Losing a character we’ve grown to love in a game is tough, but losing a real-life co-star like T’Challa… that’s a glitch I can’t seem to reset.

Lupita Nyong’o is honoring her Black Panther co-star, Chadwick Boseman, on the fourth anniversary of his passing.

The well-known actor passed away in 2020 at the age of 43 due to colon cancer, a condition he had been battling for four years prior to his demise. He chose not to disclose his diagnosis publicly. During his last years, various projects were completed, with filming taking place during and in between multiple surgeries and chemotherapy treatments, as stated by his family.

Despite Boseman passing away before filming Black Panther 2, the connection he established with his co-Wakandan cast members was profound at the time of his death on August 28, 2020.

As a devoted fan, I couldn’t help but share my feelings about my beloved actor on social media yesterday. I posted two heartfelt photos – one capturing his radiant presence alone and another with our unforgettable moments together in the first film. In the caption, I echoed the poignant words of an unknown author: “Grief never ends, but it changes. It is a journey, not a destination. Grief is not a symbol of weakness, nor a lack of faith. It’s the cost of love.” Lena Headey, who played my onscreen partner in that magical movie, truly understood this profound sentiment.

“Remembering Chadwick Boseman. Forever,” she concluded.

Despite Chadwick Boseman not being present in person for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the cast of A Quiet Place: Day One had shared that they could still feel his strong influence on set, as he had shared before with The Hollywood Reporter.

“She expressed that the absence of someone you’ve lost doesn’t seem to ever fade completely. We certainly felt his absence during the production of this film. Creating this movie under challenging circumstances is, in itself, a strong message, and I am incredibly proud of what we achieved. It was incredibly healing for me. It brought back a feeling of optimism.”

The actress from the United States also penned an extensive tribute for the late star of ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,’ expressing difficulty in accepting him as a figure of the past due to their close friendship.

“She noted that while everyone is mortal, some individuals radiate an eternal vitality, appearing timeless and perfectly placed – always here! … such as Chadwick. Chadwick was an individual who skillfully utilized his time, yet somehow he also seemed to savor it. Although our acquaintance was brief, his impact on me during that period was significant.”
