Terminator Zero Reviews Are In, Has Netflix Successfully Rebooted the Sci-Fi Franchise?

As someone who’s been following the Terminator franchise since the days of Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton, I must say that Netflix’s foray into the world of Terminator anime with Zero has left me pleasantly surprised!

As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to see Netflix giving another chance to the struggling Terminator franchise with the anime series Terminator Zero. Together with Mattson Tomlin, who co-wrote The Batman: Part II, have they managed to revive this franchise or is it just another story of the time-traveling cyborg destined for oblivion? Luckily, early reviews for Terminator Zero indicate that it’s absolutely the former. It seems Tomlin has rejuvenated the series by introducing fresh elements while staying true to its core, offering a compelling blend of innovation and nostalgia.

According to Grant Hermanns from Screen Rant, “Terminator Zero” has been highly praised as a “superior Terminator film we’ve seen in years,” and is even considered worthy of comparison with the much-admired original movie and its successful sequel.

“Terminator Zero marks a fresh approach for the franchise, venturing into anime following the brief run of Sarah Connor Chronicles and the tie-in CGI web series Terminator Salvation: The Machinima Series. Moreover, it delivers a narrative that lives up to the high standards set by Cameron’s cherished original installments.”

According to Ron Hilliard from Discussing Film, this Netflix anime has earned a flawless 5 out of 5 stars. He appreciates the way the creators have returned the franchise to its terrifying origins and added something profound about human nature.

“For long-term admirers of the Terminator saga, who feared that ‘Terminator Zero’ might fall short, there’s no need to worry. This series is simply amazing and stands tall alongside James Cameron’s groundbreaking original films. The action, horror, and narrative are all superbly crafted, but what truly sets it apart is its thoughtful exploration of human nature, our strength, flaws, and our relationship with the planet and one another.”

Returning to the chilling atmosphere of the original “Terminator” film received positive remarks from David Opie of Gamesradar+, as he commends it.

“Terminator Zero brings back the chilling fear reminiscent of Cameron’s original film, which, though classified as science fiction, was more like a horror story in essence.”

As a fan following along, I share Daniel Fienberg’s enthusiasm for “Terminator Zero.” The potential he sees in this series has me eagerly anticipating its continued journey, now that all the puzzle pieces seem to be in place.

“Considering the popularity of the brand and Netflix’s proven track record with anime series, it seems likely that this could become a long-running, engaging multi-season project, as opposed to just another short-lived production.”

Despite the Praise, Terminator Zero Is Not Without Its Critics

Despite all the high praise, Terminator Zero is not without its critics. Shawn Van Horn of Collider felt the anime lacked the “magic” of James Cameron’s efforts. Though they did state that it’s “worth a watch” nonetheless.

“If you enjoy films, I strongly recommend watching this as it’s quite captivating. However, please keep in mind that it might not replicate the breathtaking experience of the early James Cameron movies; the unique charm from those films may not be recreated.”

Ultimately, Sayantan Gayen from CBR expressed some dissatisfaction with the depth of the show, yet commended its exhilarating finale.

“Though the beginning of Terminator Zero seems a bit weak, it salvages itself somewhat during the climactic scenes. However, the entire Netflix series lacks polish in many areas, feeling underdeveloped.”

As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve been following the development of “Terminator Zero,” an upcoming masterpiece in the franchise, created by Mattson Tomlin and executive produced by Skydance Animation with Production IG Studios. Directed by the talented Masashi Kudo, known for his work on “Bleach” and “Chain Chronicle: The Light of Haecceitas,” this film promises a fresh take on the iconic series, focusing on an entirely new cast of characters in a brand-new chapter.
