IC 814 The Kandahar Hijack: Did you know the real-life pilot Devi Sharan, played by Vijay Varma, sustained a permanent mark on his neck from hijacker’s gun?

As a lifestyle expert with a penchant for unraveling captivating narratives, I must say that IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack has piqued my interest immensely. Anubhav Sinha’s insightful account of his discussions with Captain Devi Sharan not only sheds light on the gritty realities of the incident but also humanizes it, making it more relatable and impactful.

As a dedicated follower, I recently learned fascinating details about the infamous 1990s Kandahar Hijack incident from director Anubhav Sinha’s revelations regarding Netflix series IC 814. He shared that the pilot character, skillfully played by Vijay Varma in the show, bears a permanent scar on his neck as an aftermath of this harrowing event.

In an enlightening exchange with Netflix during a recent roundtable discussion, I was privileged to engage in lengthy chats with Captain Devi Sharan, the brave pilot of the hijacked flight. Captain Sharan vividly recounted his harrowing ordeal, painting a vivid picture of moments that oscillated between deep despair and fleeting relief as he was held at gunpoint by the hijackers. He shared a chilling detail about the experience – a physical reminder etched on his neck from the barrel of the gun wielded by the hijackers. The constant friction caused by the gun’s contact with his skin left an enduring mark, one that continues to linger even today.

Sinha shared that Captain Devi Sharan found comfort upon landing in Amritsar, as he felt safe returning to his homeland. Yet, this comfort quickly turned into sorrow when, about 45 minutes later, hijackers instructed him to take off once more. Furthermore, Sinha pointed out that following their departure from Amritsar, the pilot had to navigate the plane at a perilously low height of 150-200 feet in order to reach Lahore due to the aircraft’s dwindling fuel supply.

Sinha shared that despite the short duration of the flight, the aircraft didn’t have enough fuel to climb, which led to a rejection by Lahore authorities for landing. To obtain approval, the pilot had no choice but to make a threat. When asked about his thoughts during this critical moment, the pilot confided that he was contemplating an emergency landing on the highway.

The pilot stated that if necessary, he could perform an emergency landing on a highway to save as many passengers as possible. Simultaneously, he expressed hope that this precautionary measure would persuade officials in Lahore to grant permission for landing at the airport instead.

IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack is a dramatization of real-life events, portraying the harrowing 7-day ordeal that will forever be etched in the nation’s memory. This mini-series made its debut on Netflix on August 29, 2024.
