Nicolas Party Reflects on the Climate Emergency at the Leeum Museum

As a connoisseur of contemporary art who has traversed the globe to immerse myself in the vibrant tapestry of artistic expressions, I must say that Nicolas Party‘s latest exhibition at the Leeum Museum of Art in Seoul is nothing short of captivating. The blend of art history with surrealism through pungent oil pastels creates an ethereal allure that resonates deeply within me.

In simple terms, the Swiss artist Nicolas Party recently revealed a fresh solo exhibition at the Leeum Museum of Art, located in Seoul. This marks his debut exhibition in Korea, where visitors will have the opportunity to view an extensive collection of his work, encompassing paintings, sculptures, and the distinctive site-specific installations that Party has become recognized for during the past ten years.

The central focus of Dust encompasses ideas about endurance and the imminent dangers that nature and civilization face. This artist is admired for merging art historical motifs into a unique, surreal language through the use of vibrant oil pastels. Frequently, entire exhibition spaces are transformed into enchanting, fantastical realms that exude an air of mystery and sometimes bewitching allure. The upcoming exhibit will present 48 pieces from previous works, featuring 20 new paintings, five expansive pastel murals, and a blend with Leeum’s permanent collection.

The climate emergency has become a poignant conversation across all sectors and certainly one ruminated on by Party, from his first museum solo in Germany to a recent exhibition at Hauser & Wirth in New York. “We believe, and we feel, that we are at the end of our human path as global warming brings us to ecological crisis, but this feeling has been almost a constant, from Noah’s Ark and various apocalyptic tales in the Bible to the nuclear bombings of World War II,” Party previously said.

Dust will open on August 31 and be on view in Seoul until January 19, 2025.
