On Thursday evening, Pablo Larraín’s film Maria, featuring Angelina Jolie as the renowned opera singer Maria Callas, left the audience at Sala Grande spellbound. The crowd at the Venice Film Festival erupted in an electrifying eight-minute standing ovation during the world premiere, even bringing its leading lady to tears at one point.
The past week has been hectic with regards to the movie titled “Maria“. On Wednesday, it was officially announced that Netflix secured distribution rights for the film. In a statement about the agreement, the director expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I’m thrilled to collaborate once more with the Netflix team who are so devoted to cinema. This movie represents my most intimate work thus far. It is an artistic interpretation and psychological exploration of Maria Callas, a woman who, after devoting her life to entertaining global audiences, ultimately decides to discover her own voice, her own identity, and sing for herself.”
At some point, Angelina Jolie was moved to tears as she received a heartfelt standing ovation for her performance in the world premiere of director Pablo Larraín’s film during the 81st Venice Film Festival, as indicated by the hashtag #Venezia81.

Additionally, Jolie spoke publicly about the project for the first time during a Thursday afternoon press conference before the screening. It seems that she spent approximately seven months preparing for the demanding part, which involved training with opera vocalists and instructors to perfect the stance, breath control, and movements of an actress comparable to Callas. Immersing herself in opera served as “therapy I didn’t know I needed,” she shared with reporters.
She admitted, “I didn’t realize how much I had bottled up and kept hidden.” What made it difficult wasn’t the technical aspect, but rather an emotional journey of finding my voice, feeling comfortable in my own skin, and expressing myself genuinely. You must pour every bit of yourself into it. In terms of my connection with Callas, there was a softer side of me that rarely gets to show itself – a side that’s emotionally vulnerable just like her. What I identify with most about her is her vulnerability.”
Drawing from real-life events, the movie Maria narrates the turbulent and sorrowful tale of one of the world’s most renowned opera singers during her last days in 1970s Paris. The story was written by Steven Knight. Angelina Jolie heads a star-studded cast that includes Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher, Haluk Bilginer, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Valeria Golino. Juan de Dios Larraín for Fabula, Jonas Dornbach for Komplizen Film and Lorenzo Mieli for The Apartment, a company under Fremantle, are the producers.
