David Beckham Reveals His Favorite Spice Girls Song, And The Reason Why Is So Sweet

As a devoted fan who has followed David Beckham‘s journey since his early soccer days, I can’t help but marvel at the intriguing tale that unfolds when you delve deeper into his personal life. The story of how he predicted his marriage to Victoria Adams, or Ginger Spice, based on a chance encounter with a Spice Girls music video is nothing short of magical.

David Beckham is primarily recognized for his soccer/football talents, but he’s also widely recognized as the husband of former Spice Girl Victoria Adams. They have been married since 1999, are parents to four kids, and in 2023, their life story was presented on Netflix through the docuseries Beckham. Lately, the athlete looked back to the ’90s to express a charming sentiment by naming his favorite Spice Girls song.

There’s an abundance of catchy Spice Girls tunes to select, and it’s clear that many people, including those in 2024, can still effortlessly sing “Wannabe” and “Spice Up Your Life.” Interestingly, David Beckham revealed during a recent interview on Hot Ones, his preferred tune differs significantly from the one he was coaxed into singing in 2020. He elaborated:

One time, I found myself relaxing at a hotel alongside Gary Neville, my fellow Manchester United teammate and wedding best man. The following day was a game for us, but in that moment, we were engrossed in television, when suddenly the Spice Girls appeared with their latest video. It was on Top of the Pops, I believe, and it happened to be ‘Say You’ll Be There.’

On the eve of a big football match, that particular music video for a song left an impact on me – it was none other than Beckham! It wasn’t just the timing before the game that made “Say You’ll Be There” special to him all these years later. He went on:

I faced Gary and said something like, ‘Look at the one wearing the black dress,’ but it wasn’t a dress, it was a catsuit. ‘See the one in the black suit with cat patterns? I’m going to wed her.’ We were joking around, and I playfully repeated, ‘I’m going to marry her.’ And as you might guess, that’s exactly what happened.

If we suppose that Beckham had watched the music video when it initially came out, he might have been envisioning his future marriage to Victoria Adams (also known as Ginger Spice) as early as 1996. This year, Victoria, who recently turned 50, celebrated in a grand manner with a Spice Girls performance. It’s intriguing to think if “Say You’ll Be There” was among the songs performed. Here is a glimpse into the future Victoria Beckham and her black catsuit from the original 1996 music video of the hit:

According to Gary Neville and David Beckham’s accounts, he made considerable efforts to spend ample time with his girlfriend (Victoria) during their courtship. This included driving for hours just to spend brief moments with her. His dedication seemed to have been rewarded, as they have been married for a remarkable 25 years now.

The Spice Girls were massive stars on the music scene from the mid-’90s to the early ’00s, and reunited sporadically over the years since 2001. Victoria Beckham wasn’t keen on a reunion for a number of reasons in 2017, so it was nice to know that the former group members were together for her birthday this year. David Beckham himself is even the one who posted the five women performing “Stop” together on Instagram for all the world to enjoy.

To get a more intimate glimpse into the personal life of David Beckham and his spouse, don’t miss out on his Emmy-recognized documentary series “Beckham” – it’s currently available for streaming with a Netflix membership.
