Beetlejuice 3 Rumours Get Wry Reaction From Director Tim Burton

Beetlejuice 3 Rumours Get Wry Reaction From Director Tim Burton

As a long-time admirer of Tim Burton’s unique and whimsical style, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia mixed with excitement for the upcoming sequel to “Beetlejuice.” The fact that it has taken 36 years for this iconic film to get a follow-up is a testament to its enduring appeal.

Beloved director Tim Burton believes that Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (the upcoming sequel to his 1988 classic) will be his last contribution to the franchise. It’s taken 36 years for Michael Keaton’s Betelgeuse to return to our screens, as the actor is being joined by Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara, with Jenna Ortega joining the cast as the newcomer to the franchise. Fans are elated that Burton has returned to direct the long-awaited sequel, but any hopes of a threequel which may come from the new movie’s success have now seemingly been squashed.

Speaking to THR at the London premiere of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Burton reacted to the idea of Beetlejuice 3, revealing that it is incredibly unlikely that he will direct a third installment. The director referred to the great length of time it has taken him to come up with a satisfying concept for the soon-to-be-released sequel, and exclaimed that he’ll have been on this Earth for a century before ever possibly developing Beetlejuice 3. The director joked:

“Well, if [the same] time frame goes on, I’ll be about 100. So maybe. I doubt it.”

Despite appearing unlikely, it’s challenging not to acknowledge that Burton does use the word “maybe.” For decades, fans have yearned for a follow-up to the iconic movie “Beetlejuice,” released over three decades ago. However, the delay in its development can be attributed to Burton feeling insufficiently experienced to craft an engaging sequel. In his own words, if he had made a sequel soon after the original release of “Beetlejuice,” he would not have had enough insights about life to make the film captivating. He elaborated:

35 years later, we might wonder about this individual’s life. It’s as if they moved from a vibrant youth to a more complex adult phase. What kind of relationships did they forge? Do they have children? How has parenthood or maturity affected their relationships? These are questions that can only be answered when one has lived through those experiences themselves.

After Jenna Ortega brought Wednesday Addams to life in Tim Burton’s popular Netflix show, “Wednesday”, fans have pondered why they hadn’t collaborated earlier. With Ortega embodying the character so perfectly for newer viewers, she seems tailor-made for Burton’s dark cinematic realms. However, this was something Ortega herself never imagined would occur. At the recent “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” premiere, the actress shared that landing a role in a Tim Burton production was an opportunity she had never envisioned for herself. Upon receiving the call, Ortega expressed joy at the prospect of working with the renowned director, and found his sets to be “secure” and “extremely fun.” She elaborated by saying:

“Frankly, it took me aback when he inquired about Wednesday and Beetlejuice. Working with him has been nothing short of a dream come true – it’s fantastic, secure, collaborative, and welcoming. Everyone seems to be constantly outdoing themselves, making it a joyful environment that feels more like play than work. I can’t help but feel incredibly grateful for the opportunity to portray his daughter. She is truly remarkable and one of the kindest individuals I’ve ever encountered.”

In this story, Ortega portrays Astrid Deetz, who is Lydia Deetz’s (Winona Ryder) daughter. When the family’s patriarch passes away, the Deetzes move back to Winter River. It is there that Astrid stumbles upon a gateway to the spirit world and becomes trapped within it. This sets off a perilous adventure for Lydia and Delia (Catherine O’Hara), as they embark on a rescue mission to save Astrid from her otherworldly predicament.
