As a long-time fan of Saturday Night Live (SNL), I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming 2024 presidential election sketches. The anticipation is palpable, and it feels like a dream come true to see Maya Rudolph reprise her role as Kamala Harris alongside James Austin Johnson’s spot-on portrayal of Donald Trump.
As the presidential election draws nearer, fans of Saturday Night Live are eagerly waiting for an abundance of political sketches when the show resumes its 2024 TV lineup in a matter of weeks. Viewers are already thrilled at the prospect of Maya Rudolph reprising her role as Kamala Harris alongside James Austin Johnson, the current cast member portraying Donald Trump. The Bridesmaids actress has shared her excitement over the anticipation surrounding this event, stating that she’s “never encountered anything quite like this.”
For one of SNL’s longest-serving cast members, Maya Rudolph, the intense energy surrounding the upcoming election seems perfectly timed for the sketch comedy, given that Saturday Night Live is set to mark its 50th anniversary. It appears that things became quite chaotic for Rudolph almost immediately upon learning that Kamala Harris was planning to run. She recently appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live, with RuPaul as the host, to share her experiences of the wild ride since then. Rudolph stated:
I have to tell you something. I have never experienced anything like this before, in any of the work I’ve ever done, this has been such a tremendous, exciting time for me that feels so much bigger than me or anything I’ve ever done. I mean I played her on the show already, but the minute it was announced that she was running, you know, I think I was home watching The Bear, and it was, like, announced that I confirmed doing SNL, and I was like, ‘I did what?’ Everybody’s just ready for it, which is wonderful.
I can’t envision a Harris-Trump election without Maya Rudolph and James Austin Johnson, who has been highly praised for his uncanny portrayal of Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live. Rudolph finds it astonishing that our country is in a position to have a presidential candidate resembling her. She added:
It’s hard for me to imagine you telling me that someday I’d become a presidential candidate, as it seemed so unlikely. The idea that I could have any connection to this through association is astonishing. For years, I watched SNL with characters portraying presidential candidates, none of whom resembled me in the race. It’s almost unbelievable to me that we’re here now, and even more shocking that I might be considered as being close by association. It’s truly mind-blowing.
It appears that Saturday Night Live has secured its presidential impressionists, but there’s speculation about who might portray Kamala Harris’ running mate. Online buzz suggests potential candidates like Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, with Jim Gaffigan, Tom Arnold, and Jim O’Heir among the proposed names. However, Steve Martin, another favorite option, turned down the role.
On the iconic 30 Rock stage, there’s a possibility of another notable figure making an appearance – the current Vice President’s husband, Doug Emhoff. In a recent interview, he expressed his hopes that Saturday Night Live (SNL), during its 50th season, would introduce a “decent Doug character.” He casually mentioned actors like Hugh Jackman, Ryan Reynolds, or Chris Hemsworth for the role, but since it’s a parody, why not aim high and reach for the stars?
Enthusiasts can hardly wait for the comeback of “Saturday Night Live”, featuring Maya Rudolph, and luckily, there are only a handful of weeks left. The 50th season of “SNL” will commence at 11:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, September 28, airing on NBC. Episodes can also be streamed with a Peacock subscription.
