South Park Creators Revive Casa Bonita Restaurant in New Documentary

As a long-time fan of South Park and someone who grew up in Colorado, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia and excitement about the upcoming documentary, ¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!. The Mexican eatery has been an iconic part of my state’s landscape for over five decades, and to see Trey Parker and Matt Stone stepping up to bring it back from the brink is truly heartwarming.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the minds behind South Park, will be the focus of an upcoming documentary set to hit cinemas next month. This film chronicles their efforts to resurrect a renowned Mexican restaurant that was once closed. In 1997, they premiered South Park following the development of the animated series from their earlier short films, both titled The Spirit of Christmas, which were produced in 1992 and 1995 respectively. Since then, the show has made a significant impact on pop culture and expanded into a global franchise, encompassing not just the television series, but also movies, albums, and video games.

Following its closure in 2020 due to COVID-19, the iconic Mexican eatery Casa Bonita will be retraced as Stone and Parker’s journey of acquiring it in 2021, aiming to revive this beloved establishment that had been a staple in Lakewood, Colorado for half a century. Known for its themed rooms, puppets, waterfalls, caves, and cliffs designed after those found in Acapulco, Casa Bonita has earned the nickname “the Mexican Disneyland of Restaurants” by some. This unique dining experience held significant importance in Parker and Stone’s lives growing up in Colorado, making it a key factor in their decision to purchase and restore the restaurant to its former splendor.

South Park Is Still Going Strong

24 years after it first graced our screens, I’m still in awe of how Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s animated masterpiece, South Park, continues to thrive. Last year, we wrapped up season 26, and Comedy Central has seen fit to extend its run all the way to 2027! That’s a lot more laughter yet to come. As of now, fresh episodes can be streamed the day after they air on Max, but this deal expires next year. After that, South Park will find its new home on Paramount+. Not surprisingly, they’ve also agreed to broadcast a series of South Park specials in the coming years. Here’s to many more years of this groundbreaking show!

In May of this year, the latest special titled “South Park: The End of Obesity” debuted on Paramount+, receiving praise from both viewers and critics alike. This hour-long episode, which humorously depicted celebrity weight-loss drugs like Ozempic, currently boasts an 82% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Many viewers believe that – despite the passage of time – South Park continues to impress with its top-notch animation and writing.

You have an opportunity to watch Parker and Stone, creators of South Park, making every effort to revive their cherished Mexican restaurant as the film ¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor! debuts in selected cinemas on September 13. The film will then be available later this fall on Paramount+ for streaming.
