As a gamer with a deep-seated passion for politics and documentaries, I can hardly contain my excitement for Matt Tyrnauer’s “Carville: Winning Is Everything, Stupid.” Having grown up during the Clinton era, I vividly remember the impact James Carville had on shaping the political landscape. His famous phrase “It’s the economy, stupid” was a rallying cry that echoed in my young mind, instilling a sense of political awareness that has stayed with me to this day.
Matt Tyrnauer’s documentary titled “Carville: Winning Is Everything, Stupid” – one of the most anticipated documentaries premiering at this weekend’s Telluride Film Festival – has been purchased by CNN Films for both television and streaming services. The film will make its TV premiere on CNN on Saturday, October 5th at 7 p.m. ET, and it will be available to stream later in the fall on Max. Additionally, it is set to receive an Oscar-qualifying run and a theatrical release separately.
The film titled “Carville,” created by Altimeter Films, narrates an 18-month span when its protagonist, renowned Democratic political strategist James Carville, was instrumental in persuading President Joe Biden against running for re-election in 2024. Known as the “Ragin’ Cajun,” Carville is remembered for his iconic statement “It’s the economy, stupid” during Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign.
The movie also delves into Carville’s journey from the swamps to the political center, showcasing him at his home in New Orleans with his wife, Republican strategist Mary Matalin, and traveling across the nation. Notable figures like Clinton, Al Hunt, Donna Brazile, George Stephanopoulos, Paul Begala, Mandy Grunwald, Rev. Al Sharpton, Mitch Landrieu, and Sidney Blumenthal are among those who share their insights in this documentary.
“James Carville significantly transformed political consulting and has remained well-known ever since he showed the Democrats how to secure victories in the 1990s, according to Tyrnauer. Notably, his previous works include documentaries such as ‘Valentino: The Last Emperor’ (2009), ‘Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood’ (2017), ‘Studio 54’ (2018), and ‘Where’s My Roy Cohn?’ (2019). During the filming of this cinema verité project, Carville also became a key figure in the 2024 election, using his unique sway to alter the nomination process. We are delighted that CNN Films shares our enthusiasm for telling the story of this remarkable American figure and we believe they make an ideal partner.”
According to Amy Entelis, executive vice president of talent for CNN Originals and creative development for CNN Worldwide, “Matt skillfully weaves the captivating tale of James Carville’s humble beginnings in Louisiana and his rise to prominence after the age of 40. This film showcases how he transformed into one of the key players in contemporary politics. However, what makes this documentary truly special is the exploration of James’ unusual marriage with Republican strategist Mary Matalin. CNN Films is thrilled to present this unconventional love story to viewers, offering a spark of optimism amidst our divisive times.”
Apart from Tyrnauer, the movie’s producers also include Susan McCue, Ryan Rothmaier, Graham High, and Corey Reeser. This agreement was finalized by CNN group svp Stacey Wolf and WME on behalf of CNN Films and the filmmakers. It is noteworthy that Tyrnauer is represented by WME, Entertainment 360, and Frankfurt Kurnit Klein & Selz.
