Cameron Crowe, a director whose work has touched me deeply with films like Say Anything…, Jerry Maguire, and Almost Famous, seems to have stumbled with this 2015 release.
The romantic comedy “Aloha,” which was a box office flop, will have another opportunity to shine on Netflix this September. Known for creating captivating romantic films like “Say Anything…,” “Jerry Maguire,” and “Almost Famous,” director Cameron Crowe has had his share of successes in the past. However, his latest film, released almost a decade ago, was an unexpected failure. It’s unusual for a movie to boast such a stellar cast (including Emma Stone, Bradley Cooper, Rachel McAdams, Bill Murray, John Krasinski, Danny McBride, and Alec Baldwin) and yet fail critically and with audiences alike.
In the movie ‘Aloha’, there were additional issues related to casting, particularly concerning the character Captain Allison Ng, played by Emma Stone. Ng is of half-Hawaiian and half-Chinese heritage, but Stone does not share this ethnic background. Although the film explains why the character’s appearance differs from her ethnicity, Stone has expressed concerns about the appropriateness of her casting in the past. In an interview with The Guardian in 2015, director Cameron Crowe stated that the character was modeled after a real-life Hawaiian local with red hair. However, the casting of Stone in ‘Aloha’, which will be available on Netflix starting September 1, is just one of several problems with the film.

The movie “Aloha” appears to lack a clear objective or narrative depth. Despite its visually appealing setting, the characters aren’t particularly engaging, making it less enjoyable to follow their story. Furthermore, the film suffers from inconsistent editing, resulting in perplexing transitions, such as when Cooper and Stone’s characters magically reach the summit of a mountain without any intervening shots.
Although the movie is praised by some, its main issue lies in the overly sweet narrative that borders on excessive sugariness, making it difficult for certain viewers to enjoy. Additionally, the unlikable nature of the lead character and an abundance of quirky yet illogical scenes, like the silent interaction between the lead and Krasinski’s character, have contributed to its struggle with audience appeal. However, history has shown that messy movies can still find success on streaming platforms, and Aloha might just be the next film to find a second chance on Netflix.
