John Stamos Explains Why the Church of Scientology Kicked Him Out

As a devoted admirer of John Stamos and his illustrious career, I find it fascinating to delve into the intricacies of his life experiences, particularly his encounters with Scientology. In this latest podcast appearance on Matt Friend’s Friends in High Places, he offers a captivating account of his brushes with the Church of Scientology, shedding light on the enigmatic world that has long been shrouded in mystery.

Actor John Stamos has shared insights into his past with Scientology during a recent podcast interview. During this discussion, he reminisced about his visits to the Scientology center in Los Angeles, vividly describing the setting, the individuals, and the ambiance he encountered there.

According to Entertainment Weekly’s report, John Stamos recently shared his thoughts on Scientology during an interview on Matt Friend’s “Friends in High Places” podcast. He recalled a past incident where he, as a young actor, unwittingly visited the Scientology headquarters on Hollywood Boulevard following an acting class. He also mentioned the E-Meter, a device used in Scientology that measures emotional responses, humorously comparing it to Peabody’s Wayback Machine from “The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle.”

You understand, Sherman and Peabody clearly weren’t pleased with my antics. In fact, they told me to leave rather bluntly: “Leave. Just go.” Essentially, they asked me to depart their presence.

On more than one occasion, Stamos has candidly shared his encounters with Scientology. In his 2023 memoir titled “If You Would Have Told Me,” he shares an intriguing story about a book given to him by a fellow actress following a class. Believing it was related to acting, he accepted it. However, the book led him to the Church of Scientology Celebrity Center International, which he describes as being a blend of Chateau Marmont, Disney’s Haunted Mansion, and a mental hospital. Upon arrival, he was escorted into a room containing an E-meter and was asked personal questions. After some private conversations between the attendees, Stamos was subsequently removed from the room.

Previously during the podcast broadcast, Stamos shared a tale about an actor he admired who was associated with Scientology. He recounted being extended an invitation to tour the filming location for an unnamed movie that was under production in a school gymnasium where his father’s acquaintance worked. He further elaborated by stating that there were individuals who were allegedly high school students, but they appeared to be as old as his father and were dressed formally. Subsequently, he said, the director shouted “action,” and John Travolta emerged onto the set, at which point Stamos recognized it was the set of Grease.

“I wanted to be John Travolta. I still do, minus, you know, whatever
that
is.”

Celebrity Representation in the Church of Scientology

Often labeled a controversial organization, the Church of Scientology boasts an impressive roster of well-known figures who are either current or former adherents. This religious group was founded on principles devised by science fiction author L. Ron Hubbard. However, it has faced criticism for various issues including alleged criminal activities, harassment tactics, and the requirement to disconnect from friends and family who aren’t part of the church, effectively isolating followers from their non-member loved ones.

Notable individuals associated with Scientology include John Travolta, the Masterson family (comprising Danny, Christopher, and Alanna), Vivian Kubrick, and particularly Tom Cruise. However, it’s worth mentioning that some previous members include Laura Prepon, Jason Beghe, Nicole Kidman, and Leah Remini, who has been vocal about her time in the organization. She produced the Emmy-winning documentary series, Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath, which delves into her experiences within Scientology. Her book, Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology, similarly draws on her personal account of being a part of the church.
