At the Venice Film Festival, George Clooney was there to unveil his latest movie, yet journalists seized the opportunity to inquire about U.S. politics and his published opinions regarding President Joe Biden. In an op-ed for The New York Times last July, titled “I Admire Joe Biden. Still, a Different Democratic Nominee Is Needed,” Clooney commended Biden’s personality and morals, revealing that he considers him a friend, having hosted a fundraiser for Biden only weeks prior. However, he expressed concern that Biden might not be able to compete against the relentless march of time and suggested that someone else should represent the Democratic party in future elections.
At a recent press gathering for the upcoming film “Wolfs,” where I’m once again teaming up with my “Oceans” cohort Brad Pitt, I found myself fielding questions about the influence of my op-ed on President Biden’s decision-making process. As appreciative murmurs filled the room, I swiftly turned the focus away from me and instead praised President Biden, expressing that it was his actions that truly deserved applause.
“The individual deserving of admiration is the president, who performed an extraordinarily selfless deed reminiscent of George Washington. The complex maneuvers leading up to this act will likely fade from memory, as they should, while the selfless deed itself is what truly matters. This action was not an easy one, as relinquishing power is challenging for any leader, and yet someone chose to do so, asserting that ‘there’s a better way forward.’ All accolades are rightfully due to this person, and this sentiment rings true.”
The “schemes” involved notable figures, such as politicians and film industry personalities who had supported Biden in the past, pushing him to abandon his bid for the presidency. The pressure grew for Biden to reconsider his intention to run again after a less-than-impressive showing during the CNN debate on June 27. On July 21, Biden announced he was stepping down from the 2024 presidential race, as expressed in a statement he posted on social media.
“Serving as your President has been the pinnacle of my life’s honor. Initially, I planned to run for reelection, but I now believe that it’s more beneficial for our party and the nation if I step aside. My commitment is to devote the rest of my term entirely to carrying out my presidential responsibilities.”
George Clooney: Joe Biden is “Saving Democracy”
After discussing political matters, Clooney proceeded to address queries regarding the film he had come to spotlight, titled “Wolves.” Initially set for a wide theater debut, it will instead have a limited release before becoming available on Apple TV+ starting September 27. When asked about the movie’s distribution plan, which underwent alteration from its initial theatrical-only scheme, Clooney shared this information with the audience.
“Indeed, we’ve been aiming for its release, but there have been some unexpected obstacles. Remember when I worked on ‘Boys in the Boat’, it was initially intended for MGM, but eventually ended up with Amazon, and surprisingly, there was no foreign distribution. We’re still navigating through some aspects of this situation… Of course, it’s disappointing not to have a wide release, but on the bright side, many people will get to watch the film, as it’s scheduled for release in several hundred theaters.”
Directed by Jon Watts, titled “Wolfs,” a film that revolves around the tale of two independent problem solvers who share the same task, is set to premiere in select cinemas on September 20. Subsequently, it will be released worldwide on Apple TV+ on September 27.
