The Bride! Teased As 'Punk' & a 'Wildly Romantic' Musical

As a die-hard fan of both Maggie Gyllenhaal and the horror genre, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming film, “The Bride!” With Gyllenhaal’s directorial prowess demonstrated in her critically acclaimed debut, “The Lost Daughter,” and Peter Sarsgaard’s glowing praise for the project, this retelling of the classic “Bride of Frankenstein” promises to be a unique and captivating experience.

Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal is set to breathe life into a lively and energetic version of the Bride of Frankenstein on the silver screen in the upcoming film titled The Bride!. This second directorial venture for Gyllenhaal is a fresh retelling of the iconic horror movie, Bride of Frankenstein. In an exclusive chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Peter Sarsgaard, who plays a role in the upcoming production and has been married to Gyllenhaal since 2009, hinted at a “rebellious” and “romantically vibrant” adaptation, featuring “exciting dance sequences.” Indeed, this promises to be an exciting venture!

“‘The Bride’ has a punk aesthetic, moves swiftly, and carries a deep emotional resonance. It can be brutally violent at times, yet it’s also fiercely romantic in an unconventional way.’

“In the 1930s, a solitary Frankenstein journeys to Chicago in search of Dr. Euphronius, who can help him create a companion. Together, they resurrect a young woman who’s been murdered, giving birth to ‘The Bride.’ She turns out to be more than either expected, sparking a passionate romance, police interest, and a radical social upheaval.”

In the film titled “The Bride!”, an exceptional ensemble has been assembled, featuring Jessie Buckley, Sarsgaard, Christian Bale (who played Batman alongside Gyllenhaal in The Dark Knight), Penélope Cruz, and Annette Benning. Sarsgaard has only positive words for his co-stars, describing Bale as a “remarkable actor with an incredible dedication” and Buckley as “a unique, spontaneous, and improvisational actress who excels in the moment, with impressive singing and dancing skills“. Notably, Sarsgaard has hinted that “The Bride!” will incorporate musical performances.

“The film features large dance sequences and various other elements, making me incredibly excited! I’m thrilled with Warner Bros.’ involvement in supporting Maggie throughout the production process. Working alongside Pam Abdy again is a pleasure, as we collaborated previously on Garden State. The studio has a creative team at its helm, which makes it an excellent place to work.”

In addition, Sarsgaard highly praised the movie’s script, calling it exceptionally impressive, even among all the scripts he has ever come across.

“This is the most remarkable piece I’ve come across. To my mind, it caters equally to adult and teenage audiences, bridging the gap between mature themes and youthful appeal. Essentially, it embodies the aspirations and challenges faced when creating a blockbuster film.”

Actress Natalie Portman, who has earned acclaim and an Academy Award nomination, captivated critics with her directorial debut, “The Lost Daughter.” This 2021 psychological drama garnered three Academy Award nominations: Best Actress for Olivia Colman, Best Supporting Actress for Buckley, and Best Adapted Screenplay for Portman. Given the success of “The Bride” and Portman’s impressive filmography, excitement for her upcoming monster movie continues to build.
