David Fincher Working on Squid Game Spinoff & More Projects for Netflix

As a long-time fan of David Fincher‘s cinematic masterpieces, I couldn’t be more thrilled about his latest partnership with Netflix! His exceptional work on Mindhunter and The Killer has already proven that he can create captivating content for the streaming giant.

David Fincher is joining forces once more with streaming giant Netflix on four fresh ventures, among which is a spin-off from their most popular show, “Squid Game,” and a new series inspired by a classic Hollywood movie. The renowned director of films such as “Fight Club” and “The Social Network” initially collaborated with Netflix in 2017 when he directed several episodes for the critically acclaimed crime series “Mindhunter.” Later, in 2023, he reteamed with the streaming service to direct his original thriller, “The Killer,” starring Michael Fassbender as a detail-oriented contract killer. The film garnered favorable reviews from both critics and viewers, swiftly climbing Netflix’s Top 10 chart. Given the success of “The Killer,” it was anticipated that Netflix would seek further collaboration with Fincher; however, the specific projects he has chosen to undertake were not easily predicted.

Last year it was reported by serial Hollywood scooper, @TheInSneider (via X), that David Fincher had been approached by Netflix to direct and produce an American spin-off of Squid Game, the immensely popular South Korean series. David Fincher hasn’t commented on the project, but earlier this year it was reported that the project has found its screenwriter. Dennis Kelly (Matilda the Musical) is attached to write the super secretive project, with the series reportedly titled Squid Game: America, although this is subject to change. It has also been confirmed that Squid Game: America will be a U.S. spin-off from the main South Korean show, as opposed to a remake/reboot.

Additionally, Fincher is also working on a prequel series to the beloved Jack Nicholson classic, Chinatown, for Netflix. Fincher has reportedly been working on the show for a while, with rumors suggesting that the series is “ready to go.” The Chinatown prequel will focus on a younger Jake Gittes (played by Nicholson in the original). According to the report, the new series focuses on the relationship between Jake and a fellow cop, Lou Escobar (Perry Lopez in the original).

Fincher’s other two projects for Netflix remain more secretive. It has been rumored that the third project is a new, original concept movie, similar to what Fincher did with The Killer. No other details have been announced for the movie. As for the fourth project, it is a complete mystery. It has not been confirmed (either by Netflix, Fincher, or scoopers) whether the project will be a movie or series, or if it will be an original story, or based on an existing IP. Nevertheless, a new David Fincher project is reason enough to be intrigued.
