Uzbekistan to Launch Its Own Art Biennial in 2025

As a globetrotting art enthusiast with a penchant for discovering hidden gems, I can hardly contain my excitement about the upcoming Bukhara Biennial in Uzbekistan! With over a decade of curatorial experience under my belt, having navigated the artistic landscapes of Europe, Asia, and the Americas, I am thrilled to see such an event taking root in this Central Asian country.

Normally, Uzbekistan doesn’t get much attention on the art scene map, but that’s all about to change as this Central Asian country prepares to host its first biennial in 2025. This event will bring together a variety of local and globally recognized artists such as Sir Antony Gormley, Himali Singh Soin, Aziza Azim, and Behzod Boltaev to Uzbekistan.

Diana Campbell, who is based in Los Angeles and boasts over a decade of experience as an art curator, will coordinate the first Bukhara Biennial. She has served as artistic director of the Dhaka Art Summit since 2013 and has worked on exhibitions worldwide. In a statement, she expressed that for centuries, various religious and cultural traditions have coalesced in Bukhara, fostering an enriching environment for learning, craftsmanship, and artistic creation. She described it as a place where people have consistently sought unity in their pursuit of a more profound existence through the exploration of spiritual, intellectual, and material wisdom.

Titled “Recipes for Broken Hearts,” the inaugural Bukhara Biennial will focus on the theme of healing and showcase Uzbekistan’s extensive history in culinary arts, architecture, and craftsmanship. The goal is to rejuvenate many of Uzbekistan’s cultural sites for contemporary audiences, making them relevant again within the city’s life through an interdisciplinary event that transcends conventional ideas of a typical art biennial, as explained by Campbell.
