As a seasoned movie critic with a soft spot for Ben Stiller‘s comedic charm, I must admit that the upcoming comedy “Nutcrackers” has piqued my interest. Seven years have passed since Stiller graced our screens as a leading man, and his return couldn’t be more timely or appropriate.
It’s been seven long years since his last major role, but Ben Stiller is set to make a comeback on the big screen with the upcoming comedy The Nutcracker. Directed by David Gordon Green (Halloween: The End), The Nutcracker tells the story of a middle-aged workaholic who is suddenly left in charge of his four nephews after their parents die in a car accident. Stiller hadn’t planned to step away from acting in films for the past few years, but The Nutcracker provided the ideal chance at exactly the right moment.

In a chat with Variety, Ben Stiller spoke about his role as the lead actor in the film “The Nutcracker“, explaining that his absence from the screen wasn’t intentional. During a period of strikes in the industry, this independent production, “The Nutcracker“, was granted exemptions from unions to start filming. The main photography was done in rural Ohio, where Stiller’s co-stars, four brothers named Homer, Ulysses, Arlo, and Atlas Janson, who were making their acting debut, resided on a farm with numerous animals. Given the unique nature of the production, at that moment, “The Nutcracker” was the only opportunity Stiller had to work in the industry.
“I hadn’t anticipated being away from acting for this long. It wasn’t planned; it just turned out that way as circumstances unfolded. This film was produced in a location where it was literally the only opportunity I had to do it. A few months later, and I wouldn’t have been able to.”
As a movie buff, I’m excited about what lies ahead in my career. Right now, I can be found primarily behind the scenes, contributing to the success of the hit Apple TV+ show “Severance”. But soon, I’ll step back into the limelight, teaming up with Colin Farrell for a gripping true crime thriller titled “Belly of the Beast”, directed by Andrew Haigh. Who knows? There might even be a sequel to “Tropic Thunder” where I’d have the chance to showcase my skills not only as an actor, but also as a writer and director. However, what truly gets me pumped is the prospect of “Nutcrackers”, which promises a return to acting and a genre that feels like it was tailor-made for me.
Nutcrackers Is a Change of Pace for Stiller & Green
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I’ve found myself intrigued by the shift in direction taken by both Ben Stiller and David Gordon Green. Green, who has been immersed in the terrifying realm of horror with his latest installment of the Halloween franchise, is venturing into a more lighthearted and comedic territory with Nutcrackers. Interestingly, even though this film explores tragedy, it offers something less severe for him. On the other hand, Stiller seems to be returning to his roots with Nutcrackers; portraying a parental figure who is hesitant yet relatable, which I believe audiences will find endearing and perhaps even fall in love with.
“Uncle Mike (Stiller), a workaholic, is unwillingly forced to journey to rural Ohio to take care of his boisterous nephews, whose parents unfortunately pass away in a car accident. A supposedly brief trip to locate foster care transforms into weeks filled with chaotic farm life – and the discovery that he doesn’t need to find them a home; instead, they’ve given him one.”
