As a seasoned movie enthusiast with decades of cinematic experiences under my belt, I must say that Keke Palmer‘s return to episodic horror with the upcoming series adaptation of ‘The ‘Burbs’ is an absolute delight! Her versatility as an actress and her knack for embracing diverse roles have always made her a favorite in my book.
Actress Keke Palmer will headline a new television adaptation of the 1989 cult film “Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie” for Peacock. Originally directed by Joe Dante, the horror-comedy featured Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher and revolved around suburban neighbors who suspected the new family in their neighborhood was involved in a satanic cult. According to Variety, the upcoming series will be filmed on the Universal Studios Hollywood backlot, the same location as the original 1989 movie. Peacock has teamed up with Seth MacFarlane’s (“Family Guy”) production company for this new series, which has been given a straight-to-series order.
In present-day suburban settings, the movie named ‘The ‘Burbs’‘ centers around a couple (with Palmer as the wife) who return to the husband’s old home. However, their tranquil life is disrupted when mysterious new neighbors arrive next door, unearthing long-buried secrets within the cul-de-sac and exposing hidden dangers that shatter the peacefulness of their seemingly peaceful neighborhood.
The ‘Burbs was one of Hanks’ earlier films (and released in the same year as Turner Hooch) but followed his successful outing in 1988’s Big; Fisher was a well-known name for her iconic portrayal of Princess Leia in the Star Wars franchise. The ‘Burbs premiered at the number one spot at the box office during its opening weekend, but lingered somewhere in the middle with critics, as some felt it struggled to find its footing as a comedy, horror, or suburban satire. However, The ‘Burbs has garnered a cult following over the years, making it a prime candidate for a reboot or reimagined version.
Celeste Hughey, renowned for penning several episodes of the hit show Dead to Me and receiving an Emmy nod for her work on Palm Royale, has been tapped to write the new adaptation of The ‘Burbs. The team at Fuzzy Door, comprising Palmer, Hughey, MacFarlane, Erica Huggins and Aimee Carlson, will join forces with Brian Grazer from Imagine Entertainment, as well as Kristen Zolner and Natalie Berkus. Dana Olsen, original screenwriter of the 1989 film, has come aboard as a co-executive producer. The series is being produced by Universal Studio Group’s UCP.
Keke Palmer’s Return to Episodic Horror
Palmer is a versatile artist who started her journey in the entertainment industry as a child actor, making her debut in ‘Barbershop 2: Back in Business’ in 2004. She garnered recognition for her performances in ‘Akeelah and the Bee’ in 2006, followed by assuming the lead role in ‘True Jackson, VP’ within Nickelodeon’s universe. Lately, Palmer has been featured in many critically acclaimed horror productions such as Jordan Peele’s ‘Nope’, ‘Scream: Resurrection’, and ‘Scream Queens’. Some of her other significant works include ‘Animal’, ‘Pimp’, and ‘Hustlers’.
As a fan eagerly awaiting updates on the cast for The ‘Burbs, I can only imagine how exciting it would be to see Leighton Meester and Billie Lourd collaborate again, given their previous success in Scream Queens. Lourd, who has expressed her desire to rejoin the Star Wars universe, might find this opportunity appealing as a way to connect with another one of her mother’s cherished roles.
Palmer is working on multiple forthcoming ventures, such as “Sister Act 3” and the debut directorial project for Aziz Ansari titled “Good Fortune”. In this movie, which features Ansari, Seth Rogen, and Keanu Reeves, a character grapples with his life being exchanged with that of a wealthy friend due to a mystical power.
