Bruce Campbell Reveals the Worst Part of Filming Evil Dead Projects

As a seasoned movie-goer with decades of blood-soaked experiences under my belt, I must say that Bruce Campbell‘s latest revelation about the not-so-pleasant process of getting drenched in fake blood for the Evil Dead franchise has only added to my admiration for this gruff and grizzled hero.

Throughout his years portraying Ash Williams in the series, Bruce Campbell has often found himself drenched in copious amounts of stage blood. In his own terms, this isn’t an experience he’d describe as pleasurable.

As a die-hard fan of cinema, I can’t help but reminisce about Bruce Campbell’s legendary portrayal of Ash Williams in the Evil Dead series. Though he may have retired from the role, his return to battle the Deadites in the 2016 Starz sequel series “Ash vs Evil Dead” was a delightful surprise. In an interview with Inverse, Campbell shared that the techniques used to drench him in fake blood had evolved over the years, but the gag still left me wrinkling my nose just as much as it did back in his early days.

They’ve transformed a pressurized beer keg into a blood storage tank. Pressurized lines lead in at one end, and it expels the liquid out the other. It’s quite intricate. It’s an incredibly frightening piece of machinery. [In old movies], they used a simple method: they forced air through a regular green garden hose. Nowadays, our methods are far more advanced.

But it’s roughly the same repellent mixture that it always was. It has, you know, food dye in it and things like that, so it’s doesn’t taste good or smell good. It’s a strange unpleasant substance. I don’t enjoy any blood in my face regardless of how it’s delivered. It’s not an enjoyable process, but it’s effective.”

Bruce Campbell is Still a Big Part of the Evil Dead Franchise

Although fans might delight at the prospect of Campbell reprising his iconic role as Ash Williams with a return to the chainsaw, it appears that the actor has fully transitioned out of portraying this character on camera. Nevertheless, he remains deeply connected to the Evil Dead series and is unlikely to ever distance himself from it.

2023 saw the debut of “Evil Dead Rise,” marking the first significant “Evil Dead” production without Bruce Campbell’s involvement as an actor (although his brief appearance in Fede Álvarez’s 2013 reboot came after the credits). Despite his absence, Campbell served as executive producer on this film alongside original franchise director Sam Raimi. Throughout the production and post-production phases, he shared updates, including a tidbit that he had been tinkering with many of the movie’s sound effects to ensure a generous dose of “groovy” classic “Evil Dead” sounds were included in the final mix.

Given that two additional “Evil Dead” films are currently being produced, it appears that Bruce Campbell will have a full schedule ensuring that the upcoming projects by Sébastien Vaniček and Francis Galluppi meet the high standards set by the franchise’s history.
