Creative Arts Emmys: Alan Cumming Wins Best Reality Host, Ends RuPaul’s 8-Year Streak

As a long-time fan of reality TV and a connoisseur of exceptional hosting, I must say that Alan Cumming’s victory at the 2024 Creative Arts Emmy Awards is nothing short of triumphant! It’s about time someone dethroned RuPaul’s eight-year reign, and who better than the talented and charismatic Alan Cumming?

At the 2024 Creative Arts Emmy Awards held on Saturday, Alan Cumming took over as the top reality/competition show host, breaking RuPaul’s eight-year reign in this category. This was Cumming’s first Emmy win for hosting Peacock’s “The Traitors,” marking a new milestone in his career.

He missed this year’s event, but in a past interview for THR Frontrunners, he expressed to The Hollywood Reporter that he treats hosting a reality show just as he would any other acting role.

Cumming, who is part of ‘The Traitors’ and nominated for best reality competition series, stated, ‘It feels more like an extensive performance rather than myself.’ He considers his role as a character, acknowledging it’s him (Alan Cumming), but also emphasizing that it’s not exactly him. ‘I don’t naturally sound or dress like this character, and I certainly don’t own a castle,’ he lamented.

In an earlier conversation with THR, Cumming explained the key to the show’s captivating appeal: “We all tell lies, yet often fail to notice when others are lying or need to lie. It’s a social phenomenon. We serve as a hidden camera, allowing us to observe actions we typically wouldn’t get to witness.

In this category for the best host of a reality or competition program, some extra contenders were Kristen Kish (from Top Chef), Jeff Probst (Survivor), and the team of Mark Cuban, Lori Greiner, Kevin O’Leary, Barbara Corcoran, Robert Herjavec, and Daymond John (Shark Tank). However, it’s important to note that RuPaul, the creator, executive producer, and host of RuPaul’s Drag Race, which recently wrapped up its 16th season, continues to hold the record for the most Emmy Awards won by a reality show host with eight consecutive wins from 2016-2023. This remarkable achievement makes him the most-awarded reality show host in Emmys history. Furthermore, RuPaul also holds the title for the most awards won by a Black artist, with a total of 14 Primetime Emmys accrued from 25 nominations.
