As a longtime fan of both the One Chicago franchise and FBI: International, I must admit that the prospect of Jesse Lee Soffer joining the latter as Special Agent Wes Mitchell has me absolutely thrilled! After nearly 200 episodes as Jay Halstead, it’s refreshing to see Soffer tackle a character who is as carefree as a feather in the wind.
The FBI: International series has returned for its fourth season, welcoming some fresh faces to the cast. Previously announced was the addition of Jesse Lee Soffer, who played the role of Detective Jay Halstead on Chicago P.D. for ten years, to the CBS procedural as the new leader of the Fly Team. In contrast to his previous character, he will portray Special Agent Wes Mitchell in this series. It appears that this change brings a new lease of life for Soffer in his role.
Jesse Lee Soffer, known for his role as Jay Halstead on Chicago P.D., has appeared across various shows within the One Chicago franchise over approximately 200 episodes. Yet, despite the strong association with Jay, his confirmation to join International sparked considerable anticipation. Soffer shared his thoughts about portraying a new character with Entertainment Weekly. Filming in Budapest, he enjoys Wes’ unconventional traits.
He sort of flies by the seat of his pants. He has a really carefree attitude about it and he’s just going to do his thing and he’s a breath of fresh air. He’s a lot of fun.
Despite FBI: International and Chicago P.D. having some level of continuity, Jesse Lee Soffer has still managed to embrace a fresh character, which I’m thrilled about! As a fan, I’m happy to learn that the skilled actor is now getting the chance to delve into a role that offers him something new. It seems that Wes could be the kind of character Soffer was eager to portray after Jay, and I can hardly wait to witness his performance in it!
Apart from breathing life into a fresh character, the addition of Wes also enriches the past experiences of other characters. Wes shares a history with Vinessa Vidotto’s Cameron Vo, which promises an intriguing interaction between them. However, their relationship is just one layer in the unfolding drama. The story will introduce Wes following the shooting of his partner in Los Angeles, and as suspects flee to Budapest, Wes pursues them, leading to more plot twists.
Due to Jesse Lee Soffer currently working on FBI: International and filming worldwide, fans of Chicago P.D. who were hoping for Jay’s return to the Intelligence Unit might need to be patient. Some fans had speculated that Soffer may make a guest appearance following Tracy Spiridakos’ departure last season, but this did not transpire. Despite the disappointment of knowing that Soffer won’t portray Jay for now, fans can find solace in his enthusiasm and dedication to playing Wes instead.
If you’re eager to witness Wes Mitchell’s debut, make sure to tune in for FBI: International‘s Season 4 premiere on Tuesday, October 15 at 9 p.m. ET, only on CBS. Don’t forget to mark your calendars as part of the 2024 TV schedule. In the lead-up to that, you can stay updated by watching Season 3 episodes, which are available now with a Paramount+ subscription.
