As a fervent admirer of the dynamic duo, Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh, I find myself deeply moved by their recent journey into parenthood and the ensuing debate over their choice to not wear a mangalsutra during their temple visit.
Actress Deepika Padukone encountered criticism for not wearing a mangalsutra during a trip to Siddhivinayak temple with husband Ranveer Singh, just before their daughter’s birth. However, her supporters have come to her defense, stating it was an issue of personal preference and countering the online backlash by asserting that everyone should respect individual choices.
On September 6th, Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone paid a visit to the Siddhivinayak Temple in Mumbai, asking for blessings as they anticipated the arrival of their first child later in the month. Yet, a conversation started on social media platform X about Deepika choosing not to wear a mangalsutra, an ornament typically worn by married women in traditional settings.
In response, defenders of the actress countered by pointing out that the mangalsutra isn’t mandatory in many Hindu traditions and it’s not necessary to wear one in temples. They suggested that if someone doesn’t understand the diversity and non-compulsory aspects of Hindu culture, they should keep quiet. The actress is appropriately dressed, which is what truly matters.
Another user responded, “Lol .. what logic is this ? Its not about she cant afford .. where it is written that one has to wear mangalsutra when visiting the temple? Its an individual choice ….everything is man made .. following or not it’s an individuals choice !”
In temple ceremonies, it’s customary for a woman to wear a mangalsutra. Yet, if she chooses not to do so, how can we question her respect for the sanctity of the temple? Both husband and wife are dressed in traditional Indian attire, following rituals that suit their comfort. Why should they conform to your personal beliefs or sensibilities? Is it feasible to make 142 crore people content with just one set of rules?
Another chimed in, “Are you this jobless? Kya hogaya agar mangalsutra nehi hai toh? Her husband is right next to her holding her hand…so you can stfu. Uski pregnancy se prblm, heels pehen ne se prblm, ab mangalsutra nehi hai toh, woh bhi prblm, she don’t owe anything to u ppl.”
Previously, Deepika received criticism on social media (formerly Twitter), where one user jokingly remarked, “She must be so financially strapped that she can’t even purchase a basic mangalsutra.” Another commented, “Even sindoor is beyond her means,” while another added, “It’s astonishing to earn such wealth yet not being able to buy a mangalsutra, especially for temple visits.
On September 8, 2024, actors Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone welcomed a baby girl into their family. They both shared the happy news on their Instagram accounts by posting an announcement about their daughter’s birth along with her date of arrival. The image they used had the text “Welcome Baby Girl! 8.9.2024. Deepika & Ranveer” and was decorated with a golden bow.
