As a seasoned cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of cinema, I must say that Amy Adams’ latest venture into the cinematic landscape leaves me both intrigued and amused. The premise of Nightbitch, with its peculiar blend of human drama and animalistic transformation, is a bold departure from the usual fare.
In the upcoming film “Nightbitch,” Amy Adams portrays an extraordinary role where she convincingly plays a mother who thinks she is metamorphosing into a dog. During filming, Adams’ acting was so immersive that some of her canine co-stars found it hard to distinguish reality from fiction. In the movie, Adams’ character, overwhelmed by her daily responsibilities, takes to the streets at night, running with other dogs and digging in the ground. Marielle Heller directs this unique film, which is based on Rachel Yoder’s novel, and Scoot McNairy co-stars as Adams’ pragmatic husband, who stands by her during her transformation.
During the debut of “Nightbitch” at the Toronto International Film Festival (as reported by The Hollywood Reporter), Amy Adams and Marielle Heller talked about working with a dozen dogs on set, and how Adams prepared for her role. As per Heller, making the film was as wild as its storyline suggests. Marielle stated:
One instance on set that often comes to mind when people inquire about working with dogs is a scene where Amy descends the steps towards all the canines in the yard. Despite our numerous rehearsals with trainers, the unpredictability of acting made Amy behave strangely around the dogs – looking at them oddly and making gestures that caused them to become agitated and lunge at her.
The director added, “Things nearly derailed the entire production,” as it turned out that each of the twelve dogs on set were supervised by their own trainers, who were discreetly positioned off-camera. Later on, Heller recollected being approached by one of these trainers, inquiring about the situation. She went on to say…
And the trainers exclaimed, “It seemed they believed she was following us! Her actions were quite unusual, and it really surprised them. It was quite extraordinary.
Nightbitch Is a Great Film With a Terrible Trailer
The first preview for the film “Nightbitch” was unveiled just days before its global debut at TIFF. Despite the intriguing concept of the movie, the trailer failed to impress. Fans of Yoder’s cherished novel, as well as casual viewers, criticized the trailer for appearing low-budget and subpar, like a typical B-movie. Nevertheless, after the premiere, numerous critics exited the screening pleading with the audience not to judge “Nightbitch” based on its trailer. Via Twitter, @NextBestPicture commented:
The film ‘NIGHTBITCH’ surpasses expectations suggested by its trailer. Director Marielle Heller once again delivers profound perspectives on human nature, this time exploring motherhood with remarkable empathy. Amy Adams masterfully portrays a complex character, convincingly expressing her internal turmoil while maintaining the warmth required for a good mother, all the while demonstrating excellent comedic timing.
As a passionate cinephile, I’ve found myself in agreement with other esteemed journalists in X. Critics such as Barry Hertz (@HertzBarry) and Mike Ryan (@mikeryan) have lavished praise on this movie. Interestingly enough, they both warned the audience that the trailer was not an accurate representation of the film’s true quality. In simpler terms, the initial preview might have given a false impression about the final product’s worth.
