As a long-time fan of Kathy Bates, it’s truly heartwarming to see her return to our screens after considering retirement. Her journey in Hollywood spanning over five decades is nothing short of inspiring, and her humility throughout remains endearing.
Kathy Bates was ready to retire before starring on the new CBS series Matlock.
On a Sunday, an interview with the esteemed New York Times saw its publication, where the Oscar-winning actress confided that following a movie production which hadn’t gone as planned (she didn’t mention the title), I found myself in tears on my couch at home. The next day, I shared with my agents that I was considering retirement.
He expressed that acting and his work have essentially become his life at the age of 76,” he stated. “Occasionally, he feels a pang of envy towards possessing this talent. He finds himself unable to suppress it, and yearns for his entire existence to be consumed by it.
Approximately three weeks passed, and her representatives forwarded a script for the revamped Matlock series to her. The original show aired from 1986 to 1995, with Andy Griffith portraying Benjamin Matlock. In the rebooted version, Bates’ character, Madeline “Matty” Matlock, an attorney, will return to work in the legal field as a senior, amassing victories in court. The concept captivated Bates, as Rolling Stone pointed out, due to the allure of playing a woman intent on setting things right.
She stated that everything she’s prayed for, strived for, and fought hard to achieve, she is now being asked to utilize it all,” she said. “And it’s overwhelming.” (This version maintains the original meaning but uses simpler language for a more conversational tone.)
The show will be her final one. “This is my last dance,” she revealed.
CBS Studios is currently developing the show “Matlock”, which was created by Jennie Snyder Urman, who is well-known for creating “Jane the Virgin”. Urman serves as executive producer along with her partner Joanna Klein from Sutton Street, Eric Christian Olsen and John Will of Cloud Nine, and director Kat Coiro.
Over a five-decade long acting career, she remarked on fame by saying, “Being a movie star was never something I actively pursued. Instead, my goal was simply to be the best that I could be.
Kathy Bates clinched the Academy Award for her portrayal of Annie Wilkes in the 1990 film “Misery.” Additionally, she garnered Emmys for her performances in “American Horror Story: Coven” and “Two and a Half Men.
Regardless of her achievements, Bates admitted that she often felt out of place and underdressed during her career, saying “I never felt quite right or fashionable. I always felt like an odd one out. It’s as if Annie, from the novel Misery, was describing herself when she said, ‘I’m not a movie star.’ And neither am I.
Besides her current role, she has also appeared in various TV series such as Six Feet Under, The Office, American Horror Story, and the two-season long 2017 sitcom Disjointed on Netflix. Her latest film roles are in Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret and A Family Affair produced by Netflix.
Matlock will premiere on CBS on Sept. 22 and will follow on streamer Paramount+.
