Spider-Verse's Jharrel Jerome Discusses Joining the 'Incredible' Universe

As Jharrel Jerome, I feel like I’ve finally found my way back home with the Spider-Verse. It’s been a dream since I was a kid to be a part of this universe and now, as the voice behind Evil Miles Morales, it feels surreal!

Jharrel Jerome, the actor behind the wicked Miles Morales hinted at the close of “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Realms,” expresses that being part of the cherished animated series is a long-held dream realized. Unlike the live-action superhero genre which seems to be going through some rough times, its animated counterpart is flourishing, largely due to Sony’s animated “Spider-Verse” films. The “Spider-Verse” movies follow Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), who becomes Spider-Man after being bitten by a radioactive spider from another dimension. In this multiverse, Morales travels, encountering numerous Spider-Man versions. Although most are good, at the end of the latest film, “Beyond the Spider-Realms,” Miles faces his evil counterpart who transforms into The Prowler.

At the Toronto International Film Festival, Collider spoke with Jharrel Jerome about joining a cherished movie universe. For Jerome, it was a dream he had nurtured since his childhood to simply be connected to that world in any capacity. The actor expressed, “This has been a dream of mine since I was a kid just to be a part of this realm.” Although Spider-Man (portrayed by Peter Parker) is one of the most beloved superheroes ever, Miles Morales has garnered a dedicated fanbase, and his big-screen debut marked a significant milestone in terms of representation within the genre. Jerome added:

I’ve long admired Miles Morales, a character who shares my roots as a New Yorker with Dominican heritage. To have the opportunity to bring his voice to life within their world creation is nothing short of amazing. It’s significant because it broadens representation for our communities – Dominicans, Puerto Ricans – in animation and superhero lore. Being a part of this movement means more to me than words can express.

In just one scene of the movie “Across the Spider-Verse“, we meet the villainous version of Miles Morales. This occurs when Miles visits Earth-42, a world without a Spider-Man. Here, the evil Miles captures Miles Morales and binds him to a punching bag – a method he had used against Peter B. Parker in “Into the Spider-Verse“. It’s hinted that this malevolent Miles will have a more significant role in the future film, “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse”.

Jharrel Jerome recently attended the Toronto International Film Festival to publicize his latest movie, “Unstoppable“. In this film, he portrays Anthony Robbles, a young man born with only one leg who harbors ambitions of becoming a wrestler. Prior to landing the role in “Across the Spider-Verse“, Jerome’s acting career was primarily focused on projects that were not typically geared towards the average Spider-Man audience. Jerome previously played a teenager named Kevin in “Moonlight”, starred in the critically acclaimed adaptation of the popular graphic novel, “Monster”, and led the successful comedy series “I’m a Virgo” as its main character.

As a fan like me, “The Spider-Verse series is my debut into mainstream projects that resonate with a younger audience.” During our chat, I shared how thrilling it is to listen to kids and their parents express their admiration for these Spider-Verse movies. In my own words, I expressed: “These movies are truly special, and the enthusiasm they spark in young viewers is something I deeply appreciate.

Indeed, those films are truly amazing. Additionally, I often hear comments such as ‘My child adores you,’ which is quite heartwarming. While most of my work has been heavy and intended for adults, it’s refreshing to broaden the fan base a bit and have kids express their appreciation. Although they might not have seen my face, their affection is genuine.

As of now, there’s no specified date when Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will be released. However, you can watch the first two movies in the Spider-Verse saga on Netflix.
