Jorge Ramos to Exit Univision at End of Year

As someone who has grown up watching Jorge Ramos grace our screens for four decades, it is bittersweet to hear of his departure from Univision. His tenure at Noticiero Univision has been nothing short of iconic, and he has undeniably left an indelible mark on Spanish-language TV news in America.

As a dedicated gamer of Spanish-speaking culture and news, I’ve got some breaking news to share: After an epic 40-year run, my fellow game-changer, Jorge Ramos, is stepping down from Univision. This move signals a significant turning point for Spanish TV news in the U.S.

TelevisaUnivision and Ramos have decided not to renew their contract, which is due to expire towards the end of 2024. This means that Ramos will no longer be a co-anchor on Noticiero Univision, effective after the U.S. Presidential Election in that year.

Ramos has served as both anchor or co-anchor on Noticiero Univision, the most popular Spanish-language evening news program in the U.S., for an impressive 38 years, starting in 1986. For decades, he was the recognizable symbol of Univision’s news division, earning comparisons to Walter Cronkite due to his longstanding position and the level of trust viewers placed in him.

Yet, he himself acknowledged in a 2021 article, the television scene of 1986 is hardly recognizable compared to what we have today.

He penned that his journey began during an era when TV anchors like Peter Jennings, Diane Sawyer, Tom Brokaw, Barbara Walters, Dan Rather, Connie Chung, Katie Couric and others ruled the news landscape. At that time, politicians couldn’t win elections without television exposure; it was the most powerful medium. However, things have changed now.

I can’t help but marvel at how the Internet revolutionized our world,” I mused. “The younger generations seem to effortlessly grasp these new technologies, a stark contrast to those of us who grew up without smartphones or laptops. Nowadays, it’s astonishing that eight out of ten American residents consume news primarily on their mobile devices, tablets, or computers. It’s as if a massive tide is pulling traditional TV viewers towards social media and digital platforms. Sometimes, it feels like we’ve been abducted by aliens!

It’s uncertain at this moment what Ramos plans to do once he departs, but based on his statement, it seems he may have a plan, possibly found online.

Ramos announced that he won’t be saying goodbye just yet. He’ll still be hosting Noticiero Univision until December, after which he plans to reveal his future professional endeavors. He expressed deep gratitude for spending four decades at Univision and takes great pride in being part of a team that has built strong leadership throughout the years.

Daniel Coronell, President of Univision News, conveyed his appreciation and admiration for Jorge Ramos and his contributions to Univision and our expanding audience. As we move towards 2025 and beyond, our skilled team is ready to uphold the tradition of superior journalism that has characterized Noticiero Univision since its inception,” said Daniel Coronell.
