Nicolas Cage’s Spider-Man Noir Series Has Found Its Main Villain, And The Choice Is Outstanding

As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast with over two decades of immersing myself in countless narratives, I must say that the casting of Brendan Gleeson as the main antagonist in ‘Spider Noir’ is nothing short of brilliant! This isn’t just based on my excitement for seeing him bring a new villain to life but also his impressive track record in portraying complex characters in both film and television.

As we await updates on Tom Holland’s Spider-Man 4 within the Marvel cinematic universe, a different spin on our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man will grab attention on television screens instead. The upcoming TV series titled Spider Noir, which will air on MGM+ and be available for streaming to Prime Video subscribers, features an older private investigator version of Spidey set in 1930s New York City. As with any hero’s tale, a formidable adversary is necessary for conflict, and the actor chosen to embody the primary antagonist in Spider Noir is undoubtedly fitting for the role.

As reported by Variety, it’s speculated that Brendan Gleeson might portray the main antagonist in the upcoming film Spider-Noir. While the character isn’t explicitly named in the article, there were rumors in July suggesting that Nicholas Cage’s Spider-Man would be probing a murder related to Silvered Manfredi, also known as Silvermane, the head of the Maggia crime family, and femme fatale Yuri Watanabe who transformed into Wraith in the comics. Therefore, it’s plausible that Silvermane could be the role Gleeson is taking on, but this hasn’t been confirmed yet. Regardless, securing Gleeson for Spider-Noir is certainly a significant addition to the film.

In the upcoming schedule, Gleeson is set to appear in his second comic book-related production, following “Joker: Folie à Deux” due out soon. However, he has previously made a name for himself in genres such as fantasy and drama, with roles like Mad-Eye Moody in several “Harry Potter” films and Bill Hodges in the TV series based on Stephen King’s “Mr. Mercedes”. Last seen in a live-action project in 2022’s “The Banshees of Inisherin”, Gleeson received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Apart from Gleeson and Nicolas Cage, who lent their voices to a unique interpretation of Spider-Man Noir in 2018’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”, the cast for the upcoming series also features Lamorne Morris as journalist Robbie Robertson, Li Jun Li in the role of a nightclub singer (possibly our version of Yuri Watanabe), and Abraham Popoola as a World War I veteran seeking advancement. On the production side, Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot are serving as showrunners and executive producers, having developed the series alongside “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, as well as Amy Pascal.

The production of “Spider-Noir” started a month ago in Los Angeles, however, its debut date to the public is yet to be determined. Alongside this and the ongoing development of “Spider-Man 4,” “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” continues to loom on the horizon, though without a set release date as well following its removal from this year’s cinematic schedule. Amazon had also been working on another spinoff series titled “Silk: Spider Society,”, but unfortunately, it was canceled in May.
