Yesterday, during its tech showcase on September 10th, Sony unveiled the eagerly anticipated PS5 Pro. This new version boasts advanced technology over the standard model, but the high cost of the PS5 Pro has left gamers less than enthused about its upcoming launch in November.
The starting price at $699.99, excluding upright stands and optical drives, has caused quite a stir among gaming enthusiasts, leading many to express their discontent online.
Given Sony’s estimation that the PS5 Pro without a stand costs $700, some people are now convinced that the console wars have culminated in Nintendo emerging as the victor.
According to Reddit user u/GlorifiedHobo, the primary issue with the PS5 Pro isn’t just its price tag but Sony eliminating essential components like the vertical stand and disc drive while pricing it at $700. They argued that if Sony considers the PS5 Pro valuable without these features, then the cost should reflect this. Given that $700 is nearly equivalent to a Nvidia RTX 4070 GPU, the high price point should come with all necessary features.
Multiple players have been pitting the Nintendo Switch against both Sony’s PS5 and the upgraded PS5 model. A supporter pointed out that whereas Sony is launching the pricier PS5 Pro lacking essential features, Nintendo has managed to keep the Switch engaging by consistently introducing new game titles for the handheld console, such as the highly-anticipated The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD.
Despite the PS5 having a more recent release compared to The Switch, many gamers perceive that The Switch is standing strong in the console competition. Numerous players argue that Sony is falling behind due to insufficient exclusive games for the PS5 and its high price point.
Some avid gamers mentioned that they could obtain a high-performing GPU, such as the Nvidia 4070 Super, for under $700. This GPU can manage 4K at 240 frames per second or 8K at 60 frames per second – performance levels the rumored PS5 Pro has yet to demonstrate in real-world gaming scenarios. At the moment, graphics cards with prices below $700 are available on Amazon, Newegg, and Best Buy.
Although Nintendo hasn’t disclosed specifics about the alleged Switch 2, given the potential release of the PS5 Pro, some gaming enthusiasts might choose to postpone their purchase and instead look forward to the anticipated PlayStation 6.
