Initially, the athlete received a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics following an appeal by her coach, Cecile Landi, during the August 5 floor exercise final. Nevertheless, the Court of Arbitration for Sport determined that the U.S. team submitted their appeal four seconds past the one-minute deadline. Consequently, the bronze medal had to be returned and awarded instead to Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu.

After CAS made their ruling, Chiles expressed her feelings on social media. In a post, she said, “I am at a loss for words. This decision seems unfair and has dealt a heavy blow, not just to me, but to those who have supported my endeavor. To make matters worse, I’ve been subjected to unwarranted racial slurs online, which are both wrong and deeply painful. I have invested so much of myself into this sport, and I am immensely proud to embody my culture and nation.
