Joan Vassos Says Her “Goal” as Golden Bachelorette Isn’t to Get Engaged

As a fan who has followed Joan Vassos’ journey since her days as a contestant on The Golden Bachelor, I must say that her approach to love and relationships is nothing short of refreshing. Unlike many reality TV participants who seem to prioritize instant engagements over genuine connections, Joan has made it clear that she values commitment and compatibility above all else.

Joan Vassos doesn’t need her stint as the Golden Bachelorette to end with an engagement.

In an interview with People magazine prior to the debut of the Golden Bachelor spinoff, Vassos stated that she had always maintained, “I didn’t have to end our engagement.” What she truly aimed for was “to depart with a solid commitment” in a relationship.

She expressed that she desired someone whom she believed had a future with, and we both wanted to test our relationship beyond the confines of the Bachelor show. She didn’t want to undergo all this experience only to find herself in the same position as when she entered the mansion.

From the start, Vassos firmly refused to consider moving away from their home in Maryland, a decision stemming from her split with ex-husband Gerry Turner, who was once known as Golden Bachelor, due to disagreements about relocation with his former wife Theresa Nist.

She affirmatively stated, “I have no desire to part from my beloved family. My children and grandchildren reside nearby, and spending less time with them isn’t an option that appeals to me. They hold a special place in my heart. I believe anyone who could be a suitable match for me would share my family-centric values and wouldn’t dream of leaving their own family.

She’s not dismissing the idea of a long-distance relationship. Instead, she suggested that based on your work schedules, you might spend two weeks at their place and two weeks at yours, or find a common location where you all could meet occasionally, perhaps even inviting each other’s families. It would be a temporary setup until you both figure out a more permanent living arrangement, which could take years to determine.

Vassos also admitted that since her stint on The Golden Bachelor, she hasn’t ventured into dating. This decision partly stems from being asked to become the Golden Bachelorette shortly after her departure from the show with Turner. “Earlier this year, I shared my New Year’s resolutions in a video, and one of them was to start dating again,” she explained. “But then, I received a call not long after that, asking if I would be interested in being considered as a potential Golden Bachelorette. So naturally, I didn’t date.

The Golden Bachelorette premieres on ABC on Wednesday, Sept. 18.
